Leptin resistance is associated with extreme obesity and aggregates in families

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To examine the determinants of plasma leptin levels and leptin resistance in a sample of extremely obese subjects and their relatives. DESIGN and METHOD: We obtained plasma leptin values on 968 individuals from 218 families having both extremely obese and average weight members for obesity related variables. Multivariate regression analyses were used to identify predictors of both plasma leptin concentration and an index of leptin resistance. Family correlations and heritabilities were computed for p… Show more

“…Our study is also in agreement with the study conducted by Concidine et al, [3] who demonstrated higher leptin levels in obese subjects. Our study is also in agreement with study conducted by Lee et al [4] who measured leptin levels in obese and average weight adults. Figure 1 shows Pearson's coefficient correlation between BMI and leptin values in obese subjects.…”

“…Its release occurs during the peak of the night and the first hours of the morning, and its plasma half-life is of 30 minutes 6 . Leptin concentration is partially related to the size of the mass of the adipose tissue in the body 7,8 . It is known as the "satiety hormone" for having influence on the appetite reduction process 3 .…”
