Leptin expression in HIV-infected patients during antiretroviral therapy

Abstract: Background Leptin is an adipokine with complex metabolic, neuroendocrine and immune functions. Our objective was to evaluate leptin serum levels in a cohort of Romanian HIV-infected patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy in relation to their immune-virological status, lipid and glucose metabolic abnormalities and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS).Methods We enrolled consecutive non-diabetic HIV-infected patients aged 18 and over on stable cART for at least 6 months. Blood samples were tested for: lep… Show more

“…Although variations in CLOCK gene have been associated with plasma ghrelin [72], associations between ghrelin gene variations and sleep parameters have not been reported. While leptin plasma levels do not appear to be associated with immunologic or virologic parameters in HIV-infected adults [73], plasma levels of ghrelin appear elevated in HIV-infected adults independent of BMI [74]. In the current study, one GHRL SNP was associated with better sleep (i.e., each additional copy of the rs26802 G allele with less WASO in unadjusted, and longer TST in unadjusted and adjusted models).…”

“…After antiretroviral therapy, leptin level is lower at the poor immune response human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients as indicated by CD4 than those with better immune response. It might be justified that leptin may be involved in the link between the energy and nutritional status to the T helper immune response 20) . In a study of patients with TB, the production of C-reactive protein and TNF-α was inversely related to plasma leptin concentrations.…”

“…Indeed, long-term use of ART has been associated with lipodystrophic syndrome ( Finkelstein et al, 2015 ). Decreased levels of leptin have previously been observed in HIV-1-lipodystrophic patients ( Tiliscan et al, 2015 ; Tsoukas et al, 2015 ). This decrease inversely correlates with the occurrence of hyperlipidemia ( Nagy et al, 2003 ).…”
