Leptin and Its Receptor Are Expressed in the Testis and in the Epididymis of Young and Adult Pigs

Abstract: Recent studies indicated that leptin, a 16 kDa hormone, is a regulatory signal in human and rodent male reproduction. This work was designed to investigate the expression of leptin and its receptor in testes and epididymides from immature and mature pigs. Immunolocalization revealed that leptin and its receptor were confined only in the interstitial compartment of immature testes, whereas both proteins were detected in Leydig cells and within seminiferous tubules of mature gonads. The immunostaining of epididy… Show more

“…There are a few reports showing the presence of leptin and its receptors on epididymis and it is concerning pig and lizard models only (Putti et al, 2009;Rago et al, 2009). The authors believe that it is the first time that the presence of leptin Our results show that both epididymis regions, caput and cauda, express leptin and OBR.…”

“…Contrary to what is known on reproductive tissues, there are a few reports showing the presence of leptin and its receptors on epididymis and it is concerned to pig and lizard models only (Putti et al, 2009;Rago et al, 2009). As the rodent is largely used as a research model and there is still a lack of information on leptin localization and function in the epididymis, this study was designed to evaluate the hypothesis that leptin and its receptors are present on rat epididymis, and furthermore if this organ is a site for leptin synthesis.…”

“…The metformin treatment increased the Ob‐R immunostaining and expression and the intratesticular leptin content. The other authors have previously shown that Ob‐R and leptin are intensively expressed in the testicular tissue (Herrid et al, 2008; Rago, Aquila, Guido, & Carpino, 2009). Our results also showed that the proliferation of testicular cells was decreased in the diabetic group as it was illustrated with the immunostaining of PCNA, a well‐known marker of cell proliferation.…”

“…Leptin is implicated in both scenarios. Obesity may also adversely affect male fertility and while it is not clear if this involves leptin, Rago et al (2009) recently reported leptin and its receptor in the testis and epididymis of boars.…”
