This article considers how Máscaras (1995), the third novel in Cuban author Leonardo Padura's post-Soviet detective fiction series Las cuatro estaciones, transforms the genre. This article argues that at once using and subverting US tenets of noir, the author successfully transfigures archetypes of form and content, in particular commenting on the figure of the Hombre Nuevo. The article discusses Máscaras as an example of a trans-genre/transgenericidad: the novel demonstrates how postmodern symptoms such as self-awareness and metanarrativity, deviant from the archetypal crime genre, reinforce and inform notions of fluid and performative representations of bodies and sexualities in Cuba.

Leonardo Padura es un autor fundamentalmente reconocido como innovador del género policial o neopolicial cubano. En mi análisis, sin embargo, enfoco las estrategias explícitas e implícitas con las que se inscribe dentro de la historia literaria cubana y recupera un pasado largamente negado por la censura oficial de la isla. Me refiero en especial a su velada relación con uno de los más importantes autores cubanos del exilio, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, implícitamente presente en La neblina del ayer (2005) y El hombre que amaba a los perros (2009). Analizo la técnica utilizada por Padura de “negar la negación” e interpreto su escritura como máscara que visibiliza lo que parece esconder al imitar el mecanismo del ocultamiento. Intento demostrar que, de esta manera, al circunscribir el significante ausente, Padura logra escenificar la paradoja de la representación, continúa las técnicas escriturarias de Cabrera Infante e instala al autor exiliado como centro secreto en por lo menos dos de sus novelas.
