Length-weight relationships for eight fish species from the Pearl River Delta, China

Abstract: Summary Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for eight native fish species collected in the lower reaches of the Pearl River, Guangdong Province, South China. Fish were sampled in March and September 2014 and January 2015, using gillnets with various mesh sizes (5–8 cm) and trawl nets with a 3 cm mesh size. A total of 568 specimens of the eight species were analyzed. The r2 values for these species ranged from 0.951 to 0.991. The b values ranged from 3.00 for Takifugu ocellatus and Moolgarda cunne… Show more

“…The value of b for S. marmoratus was similar to the prior report (Wu, Wang, Whang, & Zhang, ). The value of b for C. lucidus was different from previous reports (Wang et al., ; Zhou et al., ). These differences can be attributed to several factors such as season, habitat, and the length–ranges of the specimen caught (Moutopoulos & Stergiou, ).…”

“…These minor deviations in the b values may be derived from environmental conditions, population size, the breeding season (Chuctaya et al, ; Froese, Tsikliras, & Stergiou, ; Zhou et al, ), the availability of feeding resources (Lima et al, ), and even differential shrinkage during the processes of specimen fixation and preservation (Kristoffersen & Salvanes, ; Santos, Silva, Vasconcellos, & Araújo, ), as suggested by Silva et al (). When comparing studies, the b parameter may also vary due to a lack of standardization in the specimen collection methods adopted in different types of habitat (rivers, streams, rapids, and lakes), as suggested by Silva et al ().…”

“…The parameter a for all 11 fish species lied within the expected range of 0.001 to 0.05 and the b lied within the expected range of 2.5 to 3.5 (Table 1) (Froese, 2006). For C. grayii , although the b value is not available in FISHBASE, it was reported with b = 3.48 ( n = 129) in the Pearl River Estuary, China (Zhou et al., 2016). The two Estuaries have a distance of approximate 900 km along the coastline.…”
