Length‐based assessment of larval lamprey population structure at differing spatial scales

Abstract: Perspectives on lamprey management contrast between pest control in the US Great Lakes and species conservation in the Pacific Northwest, New Zealand, and Europe. Five lamprey species are listed in the European Union (EU) Habitats Directive (HD) as requiring conservation measures. Assessments of HD ‘conservation status’ for these lampreys mainly target the larval (ammocoete) stage. Larval lamprey populations can be assessed by evaluating presence or absence, density and demographic structure in riverine sample… Show more

“…Assessments using empirical indicators should be structured to integrate expert knowledge (Chrysafi et al 2017), perhaps harnessing "data-less" knowledge (Johannes 1998) to interpret indicator trends (Shephard et al 2019a(Shephard et al , 2019b. Accessible metrics should be close to raw data and have few assumptions (Van Zwieten et al 2011;Njaya 2018).…”

“…Hence, TL frequency has been used as a proxy for age-classes of larval lampreys. The frequency distribution of TL has been used qualitatively (Beamish and Levings 1991;Harvey and Cowx 2003) and quantitatively (Shephard et al 2019) to describe age-classes. In many cases, though, these ageclasses have not been validated by another method.…”
