Lemierre's syndrome presenting with peritonsillar abscess and VIth cranial nerve palsy

Abstract: Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by acute oropharyngeal infection complicated by internal jugular venous thrombosis secondary to septic thrombophlebitis, and metastatic abscesses. We report a case of Lemierre's syndrome in an 18-year-old Caucasian woman presenting with a peritonsillar abscess and ipsilateral VIth cranial nerve palsy.

“…1,2,5-7 A case of Lemierre's syndrome presenting with peritonsillar abscess and palsies of the abducens and hypoglossal nerves has been reported. 8 In this case, the diagnosis of a fourth nerve palsy occurring in Lemierre's syndrome was delayed as the initial head tilt was attributed primarily to contralateral neck pain and edema from jugular vein thrombosis. The diagnosis was suspected only after the edema had subsided but the head tilt remained.…”
