Left Atrial Size in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation: Echocardiographic Evaluation and Follow-Up

Abstract: Echocardiographic measurement of left atrial size was performed in 24 patients (13 males, 11 females, median age 56 years) with idiopathic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (IPAF). A second measurement was done, after a mean period of 20 months. Our study showed that: (1) the patients with IPAF had normal-sized atria, the dimensions of which remained unmodified over a 20-month period; and (2) no correlation was found between the frequency of recurrent arrhythmic episodes and left atrial size. Since atrial enlarge… Show more

“…Atrial chamber enlargement is a common finding in patients with chronic AF (8)(9)(10), and although the link between increased LA size and AF is widely recognized, it is not clear whether LA enlargement is the consequence or the cause of this arrhythmia (11)(12)(13). The relationship between LA enlargement and AF is somehow 'weaker' in LPAF patients.…”

“…As mentioned above, there is a relationship between increased LA size and AF. However, based on the results of several studies, it is not completely clear if the increase in LA size is the cause or the consequence of AF [47,48]. In our study population, increased LA size was identified as a predictor of AF.…”
