Lee’s and Charlton’s Method for Investigation of Thermal Conductivity of Insulating Materials

Abstract: Thermal property is the important material property for engineering and analysis of insulating materials. In this study, thermal conductivities of insulating materials are determined and compared with the literature values. Lee's and Charlton's apparatus is used to measure this property of insulating materials by steady state technique. This apparatus gives more precise result for insulators that can be utilized for the further thermal related analysis. An experimental set up is prepared to determine and analy… Show more

“…The coefficient of the thermal conductivity of composite material under investigation was measured by Lee disck method which is appropriate for thermal conductivity measurement of poor thermal conductors. The coefficient of thermal conductivity k in W/m.K is determined from the following equation by placing the specimen between the two discs of the apparatus [19]…”

“…Laboratory tests have been performed as per Indian Standard Codes to test the bricks for compressive strength, water absorption and efflorescence and warpage (IS 3495, 1992a(IS 3495, , 1992b(IS 3495, , 1992c(IS 3495, , 1992d. As processed tea waste has been added to improve the insulation properties, burnt bricks were tested for thermal insulation with the help of simulated Lee's-Disk apparatus as suggested by Alam et al (2012) as shown in Figure 5.…”

“…Several materials have been measured by the system and results are presented for stainless steel 304, Inconel 625, and 99.95% pure iron covering a range of thermal conductivities of 10 / to 70 / . Alam et al [7] worked on thermal property of engineering material and analysis of insulating materials. In this study [7], thermal conductivity of insulating materials were determined and compared with the values reported in literature.…”
