Motivated by the prospect of constraining microscopic models, we calculate the exact one-loop corrected de Sitter entropy (the logarithm of the sphere partition function) for every effective field theory of quantum gravity, with particles in arbitrary spin representations. In doing so, we universally relate the sphere partition function to the quotient of a quasi-canonical bulk and a Euclidean edge partition function, given by integrals of characters encoding the bulk and edge spectrum of the observable universe. Expanding the bulk character splits the bulk (entanglement) entropy into quasinormal mode (quasiqubit) contributions. For 3D higher-spin gravity formulated as an sl(n) Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all-loop exact results. Further to this, we show that the theory has an exponentially large landscape of de Sitter vacua with quantum entropy given by the absolute value squared of a topological string partition function. For generic higher-spin gravity, the formalism succinctly relates dS, AdS± and conformal results. Holography is exhibited in quasi-exact bulk-edge cancelation.

Quantum information transfer necessary to reconcile black hole evaporation with quantum mechanics, while approximately preserving regular near-horizon geometry, can be simply parameterized in terms of couplings of the black hole internal state to quantum fields of the black hole atmosphere. The necessity of transferring sufficient information for unitarization sets the strengths of these couplings. Such couplings via the stress tensor offer apparently significant advantages, and behave like quantum fluctuations of the effective metric near the horizon. At the requisite strength, these fluctuations, while soft (low energy/momentum), have significant magnitude, and so can deflect near-horizon geodesics that span distances of order the black hole radius. Thus, the presence of such couplings can result in effects that could be detected or constrained by observation: disruption of near-horizon accretion flows, scintillation of light passing close to the black hole, and alteration of gravitational wave emission from inspirals. These effects could in particular distort features of Sgr A* expected to be observed, e.g., by the Event Horizon Telescope, such as the black hole shadow and photon ring. *

Three-dimensional de Sitter horizon thermodynamics

We explore thermodynamic contributions to the three-dimensional de Sitter horizon originating from metric and Chern-Simons gauge field fluctuations. In Euclidean signature these are computed by the partition function of gravity coupled to matter semi-classically expanded about the round three-sphere saddle. We investigate a corresponding Lorentzian picture -drawing inspiration from the topological entanglement entropy literature -in the form of an edge-mode theory residing at the de Sitter horizon. We extend the discussion to three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant, viewed (semi-classically) as a complexified Chern-Simons theory. The putative gravitational edge-mode theory is a complexified version of the chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model associated to the edge-modes of ordinary Chern-Simons theory. We introduce and solve a family of complexified Abelian Chern-Simons theories as a way to elucidate some of the more salient features of the gravitational edge-mode theories. We comment on the relation to the AdS 4 /CFT 3 correspondence.
