Chloride ingress and carbonation pose a significant risk of steel rebar corrosion in concrete structures. Various models exist to simulate the initiation phase of rebar corrosion, addressing both carbonation and chloride ingress mechanisms separately. These models also consider the environmental loads and material resistances, typically determined through laboratory testing based on specific standards. However, recent findings show significant differences between material resistances obtained from standardized laboratory specimens and those extracted from real structures, with the latter exhibiting inferior performance on average. To address this issue, a comparative study was conducted between laboratory specimens and on-site test walls or slabs, all cast using the same concrete batch. This study encompassed five construction sites featuring different concrete compositions. While laboratory specimens adhered to European curing standards, the walls were subjected to formwork curing for a predetermined period (typically 7 days) to simulate practical conditions. In some instances, a portion of the test walls/slabs received only one day of surface curing to emulate inadequate curing conditions. Subsequent testing of compressive strength and resistance to chloride ingress revealed that field specimens exhibited lower material resistance compared to their laboratory counterparts. This trend was also observed in the modulus of elasticity and carbonation rate. Notably, shorter curing periods further compromised performance, particularly resistance to chloride ingress and carbonation. These findings highlight the importance of establishing acceptance criteria not only for concrete delivered to construction sites but also for ensuring the quality of the actual structure.

Die große Zahl von korrosionsinduzierten Schäden an Infrastrukturbauwerken und der damit verbundene hohe Kostenaufwand für Instandhaltungsmaßnahmen macht eine Beurteilung der Zuverlässigkeit (Gebrauchstauglichkeit, Tragfähigkeit) solcher Bauwerke für die verbleibende Nutzungszeit immer bedeutender. Am Beispiel einer Tiefgarage wird gezeigt, wie durch Verknüpfung von Bauwerksuntersuchung und vollprobabilistischer Lebensdauerbetrachtung (Zuverlässigkeitsberechnung) eine gezielte und ortsgenaue Beschreibung des Bauwerkszustandes grenzzustandsbezogen erfolgen kann. Durch Kombination beider Elemente (Bauwerksuntersuchung/Zuverlässigkeitsberechnung) können Instandsetzungszeitpunkt und Instandsetzungsumfang entsprechend den örtlichen Bedingungen abgeleitet und eine kosteneffiziente und minimalinvasive Instandsetzungsstrategie erarbeitet werden.Improving the Prediction of Condition State by Combining Different MethodsCorrosion of reinforcement is the primary cause for the structural deterioration of reinforced concrete structures exposed to corrosive/ chloride environments. Corrosion results in high costs for infrastructure maintenance. Thus assessment of existing structures in terms of required structural performance (serviceability and safety performance level) is of increasing importance. Using a car park as an example, it is explained how the time dependent and area related/spatial development of the condition state of the structure are described by means of combining a full‐probabilistic deterioration model with results from condition control. This enables a cost‐optimal maintenance strategy, based on the dependence of the deterioration process on time and location.

Der Begriff des "Lebensdauermanagements" rückt im Kraftwerksbau auch bei der Planung von Neubauten verstärkt in das Blickfeld der Betreiber. Darüber hinaus werden für Bestandsbauwerke unter dem Einfluss von Laufzeitverlängerungen Maßnah-men erforderlich, die die Restlebensdauer zuverlässig bewerten und sicherstellen können. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeichnet die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen nach, aus denen sich das Erfordernis eines aktiven Lebensdauermanagements ergibt und stellt die Vorgehensweise und grundlegenden Elemente einer derartigen begleitenden Überwachungsstrategie dar. Fundamentals of Lifetime Management in Power PlantsThe concept of "lifetime management" moves more and more into the focus of power plant owners, also in the context of new constructions. Additionally, for existing buildings there is a demand for methods, which are able to estimate the remaining lifetime in a reliable way. The present contribution collocates the legal general conditions, which lead to a requirement of an active lifetime management, and presents the procedure and basic elements of such an accompanying inspection strategy.
