Least Adder’s-Tongue (Ophioglossum Lusitanicum L.) in Croatia - Distribution, Ecology and Conservation

Abstract: -The presence of the least adder's tongue (Ophioglossum lusitanicum) in Croatia is sparsely documented in scientifi c literature, with only a few records to date. After fi ndings from the 19 th century, the species was not confi rmed in the fi eld for a whole century, and was consequently considered extinct in the Croatian fl ora. It has been recently confi rmed in southern Istria (Croatia), in habitats with moderate anthropogenic impacts.

“…Therefore, it is possible that the induced fire disturbance favored this fern over the other coexisting species. In accordance with other authors(Brana et al 2014), O. lusitanicum seems to prefer disturbed habitats in their early to middle successional stage. The plant microcommunities detected are characterized by a few vascular species such as Rumex bucephalophorus and Trifolium scabrum, in addition to some bryophytes which are indicators of substrate humidity (Table3).These populations have been recently described as a new endemic subassociation from Mt.…”

“…Therefore, also for this species, its precise area of distribution requires further investigation. To fill these knowledge gaps, in recent years some studies have been performed in Croatia (Brana et al 2014), Algeria (Medjahdi et al 2018), and Italy (Carta et al 2008;Médail et al 2016), which have expanded its known distribution (Figure 4B). In the Italian Peninsula it is considered a very rare species (Pignatti et al 2017), reported only for the Tyrrhenian and Puglia regions (Bartolucci et al 2018).…”

“…Rt Kamenjak is known for its floristic richness; over 600 plant taxa have been recorded on this small piece of land (Topić & Šegulja, 2000). Some of these plants are rare, endemic, endangered and protected by law (Topić, 1994;Topić et al 1997Topić et al , 1998Perko 1998;Vuković, 2010;Vuković et al, 2013;Brana et al, 2014). Accordingly, Rt Kamenjak and the 12 nearby islets have been protected since 1996 due to their great floristic and landscape richness, today in the category of Significant Landscape, the "Lower Kamenjak and Medulin Archipelago".…”

“…It was a subject of detailed botanical studies in historical times, especially by Freyn (1878Freyn ( , 1881Freyn ( , 1900, Tommasini (1873) and Neugebauer (1875). After the southernmost part was legally protected, botanists became increasingly interested in the area (Topić, 1994;Topić et al, 1997Topić et al, , 1998Perko, 1998;Topić & Šegulja, 2000;Vuković et al, 2011Vuković et al, , 2013Brana et al, 2014;Rottensteiner, 2014;Ljubičić et al 2020) and as a result, the vascular flora of the area is relati-vely well studied. In contrast, data about the bryophytes of Rt Kamenjak are remarkably poor.…”
