Learning to See Clear: Quantification and Multidimensional Assessment of Value Stream Mapping Alternatives Considering Variability

Abstract: The prior quantification and validation of future state maps in lean production and optimization projects mostly is not taken into consideration in the traditional value stream mapping approaches. Furthermore the implementation of future states is based upon the trial and error principle. The effects of proactively changing production systems often are unknown and could underlie vast variations due to the planned outcome. So for many managers hard facts are missing and the uncertainties included in such a valu… Show more

“…The current TVSM for the routing operation studied is shown in Figure 6. This includes information regarding the level of variability identified in the operations (Roessler et al, 2014;McDonald et al, 2002;Braglia et al, 2009;Marvel and Standridge, 2009). …”

“…Womack and Jones (2011) described a first approach to apply the analysis and design of value streams beyond company boundaries. In Roessler et al (2014), an approach for the quantification and multi-dimensional assessment of VSM alternatives in consideration of variable process chains is presented. The advancement of VSM to design work systems is investigated by Kuhlang et al (2014).…”

“…The design and the quantification of future states may be performed multiple times, which results in alternative future state maps. Stage 4 is proposed to allow an assessment and a comparison of developed future states, which is not focus of this paper, see [9].…”

“…A first application of the proposed procedure could be made during a case study at the Center for Industrial Productivity at the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, a real production system for educational and staff training purposes, cf. [9]. The production system produces pneumatic cylinders in four variants.…”
