ObjectiveCompetitive learning techniques are being successfully used in courses of different disciplines. However, there is still a significant gap in analyzing their effects in medical students competing individually. The authors conducted this study to assess the effectiveness of the use of a competitive learning tool on the academic achievement and satisfaction of medical students.MethodsThe authors collected data from a Human Immunology course in medical students (n = 285) and conducted a nonrandomized (quasi-experimental) control group pretest-posttest design. They used the Mann-Whitney U-test to measure the strength of the association between two variables and to compare the two student groups.ResultsThe improvement and academic outcomes of the experimental group students were significantly higher than those of the control group students. The students using the competitive learning tool had better academic performance, and they were satisfied with this type of learning. The study, however, had some limitations. The authors did not make a random assignment to the control and experimental groups and the groups were not completely homogenous.ConclusionThe use of competitive learning techniques motivates medical students, improves their academic outcomes and may foster the cooperation among students and provide a pleasant classroom environment. The authors are planning further studies with a more complete evaluation of cognitive learning styles or incorporating chronometry as well as team-competition.

Background: Learning styles are the ways students learn, intake and process new information. The contribution of learning styles for educational quality is evident and have important implications to develop effective curricula. Teachers can effectively plan instructional activities if they know the learning styles of students. This study was conducted to find out the preferred learning styles of medical and physiotherapy students.Methods: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted at Azra Naheed Medical College Lahore from January to March 2014. Honey and Muffard Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ) was used to assess the preferred learning styles. The medical students of 3rd year and 6th semester physiotherapy class were invited for the study. The collected data was organized and analyzed by the use of statistical tools.Results: 120 students participated in this study, out of which 60 (50 %) were students of MBBS class whereas 60 (50 %) were of physiotherapy class. 48 (40%) were male students and 72 (60%) were female students. Both the groups have reflector as dominating learning style with a minor difference of (40%) and (42.5%) for medical and physiotherapy respectively.Conclusion: Students have different learning styles and require versatile instructional and assessment strategies. Preferred learning style of medical and physiotherapy students found in this study is reflector, however all the learning styles are present in both groups.

D Due to the ever-changing nature of technology, it is no longer argued whether or not engineers need to brush up on their skills and/or take up new ones as they practice in the field. Engineering departments at universities, therefore, have felt obliged to make adjustments to their curriculum to meet the needs of societies for engineers with up-to-date technical knowledge. However, it is accepted that technical knowledge per se is not sufficient to be successful engineers. They will also need to acquire soft/professional skills, which include an ethical orientation and certain communication skills.The engineering criteria established by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) underline the Ampirik Araflt›rma / Empirical Research www.yuksekogretim.org Bu çal›flma, Birleflik Arap Emirlikleri'ndeki Petroleum Institute'te ‹letiflim derslerinin, mühendislik ö¤rencilerinin sosyal etkileflime dayal› ö¤renme stillerini kullan›mlar› üzerindeki etkisini belirlemeyi amaçlamaktad›r. Çal›flmaya, 2012-2013 akademik y›l›nda toplam 62 birinci s›n›f ö¤rencisi kat›lm›flt›r. Kantitatif veriler, Grasha-Reichmann Ö¤renci Ö¤renme Stilleri Ölçe¤i (Grasha-Reichmann Student Learning Style Scales, GRSLSS) kullan›larak top-lanm›flt›r. Ön ve son test sonuçlar›n› incelemek üzere efllefltirilmifl örnek ttesti ve Wilcoxon testi kullan›lm›flt›r. Kalitatif verileri toplamak amac›yla, onaylar› al›nan 10 kat›l›mc›yla yar› yap›land›r›lm›fl görüflme gerçeklefltirilmifltir. Sonuçlar, kat›l›mc›lar›n "iflbirlikçi", "kat›l›mc›" ve "sak›ngan" stil puanla-r›n›n artt›¤›n›, "rekabetçi" ve "ba¤›ml›" stil puanlar›n›n ise azald›¤›n› göstermifltir.
