Motivation and learning habit generally play an important role in influential the results of a student's exam. This study aims to determine the relationship between motivations, learning habit and overall achievement in the second semester of Mechanical Engineering students at Terengganu Polytechnic. The study also aims to identify the differences in learning by gender at early achievement in the previous semester. To achieve this goal, the method of survey is conducted. Samples consisted of 196 students in second semester out of four programs in Mechanical Engineering Department. The study instrument used was Selmes Learning Inventory which presented four learning styles, namely deep-style, surface-style, well-organized style and diligent. The fifth style of learning, motivational style has been modified to measure the internal and external motivation. Data collected were analyzed descriptively and inferred using SPSS software. The results of the descriptive analysis found that students had high internal motivation as compared to external motivation as well as practicing surface style and deeper style than planned and diligent style. Inferential analysis results found that the overall achievement of the second semesters had a relationship with the in-depth learning style, effort and planning. There is a significant relationship between deep learning style and internal motivation. There was no significant difference in learning habit by gender and early achievement. The implication of this study is that motivation plays an important role in determining the choice of learning methods practiced by the students.

ÖzBireylerin öğrenme stil tercihleri farklılık gösterir. Bazı bireyler birden fazla öğrenme stilini kullanmayı da tercih edebilirler. Öğrenme sürecinde en etkin öğrenme stilinin/ stillerinin tercihi sürecin kısalmasını ve etkin bir öğrenme yolunun oluşmasına yardımcı olabilmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı lisans düzeyinde turizm rehberliği eğitimi alan öğrencilerin öğrenme stillerinin genel akademik başarı puanlarına etkisinin belirlenmesidir. Veriler, literatüre dayalı geliştirilen bir anketin Türkiye'de lisans düzeyinde turizm rehberliği eğitimi alan 1105 öğrenciye uygulanmasıyla derlenmiştir. Anketler, öğrencilere 2016-2017 eğitim-öğretim yılı bahar yarıyılında, turizm rehberliği bölümlerinde görevli öğretim elemanlarının yardımıyla, sınıf bazında kota örneklemesine göre, 10.02-20.03.2017 tarihleri arasında yüz yüze uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde, tanımlayıcı istatistiklerin yanı sıra t-testi, ANOVA ve çoklu regresyon analizinden yararlanılmıştır. Lisans düzeyinde turizm rehberliği öğrencilerin genel başarı puanlarında öğrenme stillerinin etkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin görsel öğrenme stillerini tercih ettiği belirlenmiştir. Çalışma, lisans düzeyinde rehberlik eğitimi alan öğrencilerin, genel başarı puanlarının arttırılmasına yönelik çeşitli öneriler ile son bulmaktadır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Turizm rehberliği, öğrenme stilleri, lisans öğrencileri, genel akademik başarı puanı AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of learning styles of the undergraduate students of tourism guidance on their cumulative grade point average. The data were collected via a questionnaire developed based on the literature to 1105 students who received tourism guidance education at undergraduate level in Turkey. The questionnaires were implemented to the students face to face with the help of the lecturers in the tourism guidance departments in the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year, according to quota sampling based on the class. The data were subjected to t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis besides descriptive statistics. It was determined that learning styles were effective on the cumulative grade point average of tourism guidance students at undergraduate level. It is determined that students prefer visual learning styles. The study concludes with various suggestions for increasing the cumulative grade point averages of the students who receive guidance education at undergraduate level.

Recent studies of the teaching and learning process have shown that learners tend to receive and process information in different ways. This study was conducted to explore the impact of matching instructional strategies to the learners learning styles, considering their cultural background in the teaching of Electricity and Magnetism among Grade 11 physical science learners in schools around Mthatha. To achieve the intended objective and to answer the research question "what impact does the learners" learning style preferences have on learners" academic achievements", a total of 205 physical science learners were sampled for the study. A purposive convenience sampling technique was used to select four schools from the target population. A non-experimental quantitative exploratory design was adopted for the study. Physical Science Achievement Test and Index of Learning Style Questionnaire were the main instruments used for gathering the data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including an independent sample ttest together with multiple regression analysis. The result indicates that, the four learning style categories combined did not contribute significantly to the academic achievement of the grade 11 learners in electricity and magnetism at the four high schools in Mthatha.
