Learning Quality Management for Ships’ Upkeep and Repair Environment

Abstract: Ships Quality Management (QM) in a naval disciplined repair environment is under significant demands. The purpose of this paper is to emphasise the requirement for the establishment of quality management. Quality management is essential to support operations, work preparation and formulation, material replenishment, repairs and trial processes to enhance productivity and availability. Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) encompassing Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Condition Based Maintenance… Show more

“…Proficiency and innovation occur in single-and doubleloop learning teams or in committees with each one dedicated to certain responsibilities or problem solving techniques (Al-Raqadi et al 2016;Cook 1997). Application of reliability maintenance models in a dockyard ships' repair environment is necessary to integrate logistics and engineering management and to solve problems (Al-Raqadi et al 2015;Blanchard 1986;Conachey et al 2008;Koochaki et al 2011;Lazakis et al 2010;Moubray 1991;Oke and Charles-Owaba 2006). This has to be supported with a modern method of enhancing the end product performance.…”

“…It is in these areas that the dockyard repair organisation tends to get it wrong, leading to unnecessary resource expenditure when making difficult corrections. Performance can therefore be improved by developing standards related to the reliability, availability and maintainability of machinery, structures, equipment and on-board systems to enhance operational time at sea (Al-Raqadi et al 2015;Cooke 1955;DeWitt 1991;Koochaki et al 2011;Lazakis et al 2010). The ''availability as a product of system reliability and maintainability'' (Raper 1970, p. 164) has to be treated with maximum effort.…”
