Learning musculoskeletal anatomy through new technologies: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Objective: to investigate the influence of the application of new methodologies on learning and the motivation of students of the Anatomy discipline. Method: randomized, longitudinal, prospective, intervention study. Sixty-two students were recruited to assess the impact of different methodologies. The sample was randomized to compare the results of teaching with a 3D atlas, ultrasound and the traditional method. The parameters were assessed through a satisfaction evaluation questionnaire and anatomical chart… Show more

“…Students enthusiastically embraced US‐based learning and especially liked the hands‐on part. The increased interest and positive attitudes are in line with previous studies assessing students’ perceptions after hands‐on US‐based anatomy instruction (Knobe et al, 2012; Birrane et al, 2018; Knudsen et al, 2018; Bell et al, 2019; Rodríguez‐López et al, 2020). These attitudes can play a significant role in promoting deeper learning.…”

“…70 Many authors note that the use of innovative 3D technologies has an emotionally beneficial effect on students, improves perception, and enhances motivation. 71,72 Most comparative studies look at traditional versus novel teaching tools, most notably dissection versus virtual platforms. 39,73,74,75,76,77 Almost all came to the conclusion that no innovative method is a complete substitute for dissection, but rather successfully complements it.…”

“…This tool allows the students to examine 3D reconstructions by region or organ system and, by touching the screen, rotating the model to examine from any angle, highlight the structure to learn the name, innervation, blood supply, muscle attachments and movements 39 . In addition, practical demonstrations were performed using augmented reality (AR) 40 . This application was firstly used in 3D and then in AR for visualizing osteology (i.e., bone anatomical location and their individual details), arthrology (i.e., bones and ligaments involved in each joint and accessory and physiological movements) and myology (i.e., origin, insertion, innervation, blood supply and actions).…”
