Ultrasound versus videos: A comparative study on the effectiveness of musculoskeletal anatomy education and student cognition

Abstract: Ultrasound imaging is a dynamic imaging technique that uses high‐frequency sound waves to capture live images of the structures beneath the skin. In addition to its growing use in diagnosis and interventions, ultrasound imaging has the potential to reinforce concepts in the undergraduate medical curriculum. However, research assessing the impact of ultrasound on anatomy learning and student cognition is scarce. The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of ultrasound‐based instruction versus narrated … Show more

“…Finally, in a recent study comparing musculoskeletal ultrasound with videos, a significant difference in anatomical knowledge was observed, with videos demonstrating a significant advantage. 9 This study extends on the findings of the latter study. In that work, it was hypothesized that, building on embodied cognition principles, a hands-on ultrasound approach would result in larger knowledge uptake.…”

“…A possible explanation could be attributed to the interference of extraneous cognitive load, which may diminish the benefits of a hands-on approach. 9 Research on the role of cognitive load in ultrasound-based anatomy education is scarce. This study aimed to address this gap in the literature.…”

“…Critique and evaluation are carried out on each piece of literature with the aim of assessing the credibility, relevance, and quality of the methodology used in previous research (Tan, J., 2010). Conclusions are drawn based on the literature analysis and the development of new understanding related to the research topic (Vandenbossche, Vicky et al, 2023). In the research process, information updates can be made by adding relevant new literature discovered during the research process.…”
