Learning about PRP using cell-based models

Abstract: SummaryIntroduction: cell-based tissue engineering strategies using human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) may help to augment tendon healing. To further investigate the in-vitro behavior of this cell population, we investigated low oxygen culture levels, and growth factor supplementation and their effect on expression of tendon extracellular proteins and cell proliferation. Materials and methods: bone marrow aspirate (BMA) was harvested during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Characterized hMSCs derived from B… Show more

“…Cell culture models enable evaluating the effects of different PRP products under controlled and standardized conditions. 4 When the standardized PRP powder is used, the nonexistent variability among different PRP preparations might lead to more reliable results in clinical application. 20 A recent in vitro study showed that the effects of PRP on mesenchymal stem cells depend on platelet count.…”

“…To date there are several commercially available PRP systems 9,15,55 , which differ among them in either the centrifugation method, platelet concentration, release rate of growth factors 9,56,57 , white 58,59 and red blood cell concentration and/or activation 60 . Differences among PRP commercial presentations have not been clarified, regarding the optimal concentration of growth factors delivery and their effects on tendon regeneration.…”
