The lean concept has been identified with large companies, serial production, and the automotive industry. The approach is growing in popularity and the SME sector is increasingly using it. It is also gaining ground in the service sector. An ever-accelerating world does not always provide opportunities for understanding the principles of lean prior its introduction; consequently, the expected results rarely materialize. During my research in the service industry SME, the in-depth interviews, questionnaire queries, and on-site crawls (gemba walks) I have completed confirmed the existence of an illusory lean that originates from a misinterpretation of the principles. Lean is used as a tool and not as a philosophy. For this reason, it does not bring the expected results. Through hotel industry examples in my research, I present the development possibilities of the process and the potential dangers of misinterpreting lean use.

With the help of a detailed survey, this article aims to examine how effective communication can aid the lean transformation process within a company. Lean methodologies enable companies to create processes and systems that are so efficient that they give them a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace. On the one hand, these improvements can be made by reducing costs and losses and, on the other, by increasing value to the customer. In this study, a survey was carried out in Hungary among 20 Hungarian companies with lean practices, collecting more than 800 employee responses and focusing on the benefits of lean practices in manufacturing companies. Both managers and employees expressed the same opinion, highlighting the importance of communication in the transformation process. The research was conducted among companies with lean experience, and the results and conclusions described can be applied to the lean implementation projects of Hungarian manufacturing companies. Lean practitioners identified communication as almost as important as team composition and management commitment. The research showed that the success of the transformation depends not only on implementing but also on sustaining and remaining dedicated to change, which is only feasible with the right form and frequency of communication.

The European project was borne out of the strong desire of Western European politicians to root out wars and create peace and prosperity in Europe in the post-war period. With the Eastern enlargement of the EU, this mission seemed completed. However, a series of crises starting in 2008 with the Global Financial Crisis revealed many pressing problems in the European integration process. The EU needs to adapt to the new geopolitical and geoeconomic realities while it should take new initiatives to make European integration fair and sustainable. In this paper, using a new conceptual framework, we analyse the factors that hinder fairness and sustainability in the EU and suggest broad directions for reforms that can promote the European integration process.
