Lean Construction in a Serious Game Using a Multiplayer Virtual Reality Environment

Abstract: Whereas Lean Construction is a state-of-the-art practice in construction, associated simulation games in academic or professional education still rely on manual data input and analysis. Proposed is a digital learning platform that teaches the concept of lean construction using an active, hands-on serious gaming environment involving multiple players simultaneously in virtual reality. The novelty is to share rapid feedback with the participants while playing the game. Findings through testing demonstrate they b… Show more

“…Many approaches can be taken in terms of deciding and using different VR hardware and software. Creating an environment suitable for construction safety education and training requires both an immersive scene (Bhandari et al , 2020; Albert et al , 2014) but also a way to communicate performance, here in the form of collected data which can be transformed into information, which has been an efficient way of showing performance differences (Jacobsen et al , 2021).…”

“…Better engagement of trainees, provision of text-free interfaces and representation of actual workplaces are notable advantages of computeraided training methods such as VR games. Besides, recent studies in VR training demonstrate the possibility of automated performance assessment [4] through runtime data collection and collaborative training using multiplayer games [5].…”

“…The trainees can receive personalized feedback based on their performance assessed from the data collected during training [4]. Multiplayer serious games create collaborative learning spaces for the participants [5] and dynamically updated VR training exposes the trainees to the latest work environment according to the construction progress [6].…”
