RESUMO A utilização de índices constitui ferramenta prática e importante para o manejo da adubação nitrogenada, na cultura da batata e, ainda, pode prognosticar a produtividade de tubérculos. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do parcelamento do fertilizante nitrogenado sobre índices de nitrogênio (N) em plantas de batata, bem como estabelecer um modelo para o prognóstico da produtividade de tubérculos. Foram utilizados os cultivares Ágata e Asterix em dois experimentos independentes. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - controle, sem adubação nitrogenada, T2- 50% da dose no plantio + 50% aos 22 dias após a emergência (DAE) e T3 - dose única no plantio. Foi utilizada a ureia como fonte de N e a dose total aplicada foi de 220 kg ha-1 de N. Os índices avaliados foram: clorofila (CHL), flavonóis (FLV), balanço de N (NBI), determinados, com o Dualex e SPAD, na quarta folha completamente desenvolvida, aos 10, 21, 34, 48, 62 e 76 DAE. As doses e o parcelamento do N interferiram nos índices avaliados, sendo que os valores de SPAD, CHL e NBI decresceram com a idade da planta, enquanto houve aumento dos valores de FLV, para ambos os cultivares. O índice CHL é o mais indicado para estimar indiretamente o teor de nitrato na seiva do pecíolo, o teor de N na matéria seca e a quantidade de N acumulada na quarta folha. Tanto o índice SPAD quanto o índice CHL podem prognosticar a produtividade final de tubérculos de batata e foi estabelecido um modelo utilizando esses índices.

Yield and Physiological Response of Potatoes Indicate Different Strategies to Cope with Drought Stress and Nitrogen Fertilization

Access to Water and Nitrogen (N) are key challenges in potato crop management that could be optimized through understanding related agronomic and physiological traits. The responses to water deficit and two levels of nitrogen (0 and 200 kg N.ha-1) were assessed here for agronomic and physiological traits for potato genotypes UNICA, Achirana-INTA, and CIP397077.16, chosen for their short vegetative period (90--110 days) and tolerance to water deficit. Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) was greatly reduced in all genotypes under drought, even dropping to nearly zero. Despite this, the tuber yield and total biomass reduction of around 50 % for all genotypes could be alleviated with N application. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), chlorophyll content (SPAD), and Canopy cover (CC) were found to be good indicators for predicting nitrogen deficits and detecting early stress by drought. Overall, each genotype had different strategies to manage N and cope with drought stress. UNICA was the most efficient genotype at using the N present in the soil and tolerating drought stress, while Achirana-INTA was most affected by drought in terms of NUE. Based on the results, it is suggested that maximum fertilizer use efficiency can be obtained with low N rates applied under well-watered conditions. Improved NUE and a greater understanding of the physiological response of crops to drought stress and N fertilization will help to reduce fertilizer use, lessening the effects of water contamination and improving input efficiency.Resumen El acceso al agua y al nitrógeno (N) son retos clave en el manejo del cultivo de la papa, que pudieran optimizarse a través del entendimiento de aspectos agronómicos y fisiológicos relacionados. Aquí se analizaron las respuestas al déficit de agua y a dos niveles de nitrógeno (0 y 200 kg N ha −1 ) para rasgos agronómicos y fisiológicos para los genotipos de papa UNICA, Achirana-INTA y CIP397077.16, seleccionados por su período vegetativo corto (90-110 días) y su tolerancia al déficit de agua. La eficiencia en el uso del nitrógeno (NUE) se redujo grandemente en todos los genotipos bajo sequía, aun bajando a cerca de cero. A pesar de esto, el rendimiento de tubérculo y la reducción total de biomasa de cerca del 50 % para todos los genotipos pudo superarse con la aplicación de N. Se encontró que el Índice de la Diferencia Normalizada de Vegetación (NDVI), el contenido de clorofila (SPAD) y la cubierta del follaje (CC), fueron buenos indicadores para la predicción de los déficits de nitrógeno y para detectar agobio temprano por sequía. Sobre todo, cada genotipo tuvo diferentes estrategias para manejar el N y lidiar con el agobio hídrico. UNICA fue el genotipo más eficiente en el uso del N presente en el suelo y en la tolerancia al estrés por sequía, mientras que Achirana-INTA fue el más afectado por sequía en términos de NUE. This study evaluated the possibility of the use of GreenSeeker sensor and CM-100 chlorophyll content meter for in-season N and yield prediction in order to promote timely split N application in potato production in Kenya. Four N-fertilization rates; N0 (0), N1 (60), N2 (90) and N3 (130 kg N/ha) were led out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in a Greenhouse for two seasons. The results showed that % N leaf content was significantly affected by N rates. The % N leaf content and potato leaf chlorophyll content decreased as the season continued whereas the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) increased as the season continued. CM-100 values were significantly correlated with % N leaf content at vegetative (r=0.86***) and tuber initiation (r=0.74***) growth stages of the crop whereas the NDVI values were only significantly correlated with % N leaf at tuber initiation (r=0.82***). A significant relationship was found between CM-100 values taken at different potato stages (end of vegetative, tuber initiation, bulking and maturation stages) and tuber yield (r=0.90***, 0.82***, 0.47* and 0.41*). The NDVI values at end of vegetative growth, tuber initiation and maturation of potato were also significantly correlated with tuber yield (r=0.81***, 0.43* and 0.54*), except at bulking stage (r=0.33). For efficient in-season N management and yield prediction, CM-100 and GreenSeeker are recommended at an early stage of the crop. Further research in the different potato growing areas in Kenya to establish the different thresholds at different potato growth stages is recommended.
