Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a principal horticultural crop of tropical and subtropical regions. Knowledge of how papaya responds to environmental factors provides a scientific basis for the development of management strategies to optimize fruit yield and quality. A better understanding of genotypic responses to specific environmental factors will contribute to efficient agricultural zoning and papaya breeding programs. The objective of this review is to present current research knowledge related to the effect of environmental factors and their interaction with the photosynthetic process and whole-plant physiology. This review demonstrates that environmental factors such as light, wind, soil chemical and physical characteristics, temperature, soil water, relative humidity, and biotic factors such as mycorrhizal fungi and genotype profoundly affect the productivity and physiology of papaya. An understanding of the environmental factors and their interaction with physiological processes is extremely important for economically sustainable production in the nursery or in the field. With improved, science-based management, growers will optimize photosynthetic carbon assimilation and increase papaya fruit productivity and quality. Key words: Carica papaya, environmental factors, photosynthesis, water relations, water-use efficiency Ecofisiologia do mamoeiro: uma revisão: O mamoeiro (Carica papaya L.) é uma das principais culturas das regiões tropicais e subtropicais. O conhecimento das respostas dessa cultura aos fatores do ambiente pode fornecer bases científicas para traçarem-se estratégias de manejo que possam otimizar a produção e a qualidade dos frutos. Um melhor entendimento das respostas dos genótipos aos fatores específicos do ambiente poderá contribuir para um eficiente zoneamento agrícola e para futuros programas de melhoramento da espécie. Objetivou-se apresentar o estado-da-arte do conhecimento relacionado aos efeitos e à interação dos fatores ambientes sobre o processo fotossintético e a fisiologia da planta inteira. Nesta revisão, demonstra-se que os fatores do ambiente, como luz, vento, característica físicas e químicas do solo, temperatura, água no solo, umidade relativa, além de fatores bióticos, como fungos micorrízicos e o genótipo, podem afetar intensamente a produtividade e a fisiologia do mamoeiro. Uma compreensão da ação dos fatores do ambiente e suas interações com o processo fisiológico dessa espécie são de grande importância para a sustentabilidade econômica da produção do mamoeiro, em condições de viveiro e de campo. A partir de um manejo da cultura baseado em resultados científicos, será possível otimizar a assimilação fotossintética do carbono e elevar a qualidade e produção de frutos do mamoeiro. The sexual types of papaya plants (Carica papaya L.), namely female, male, and hermaphrodite, can only be distinguished during their reproductive phase. As a result, numerous studies have been conducted to identify distinctive characteristics among these sexual types in papaya seedlings. One hypothesis suggests that leaf temperature and initial vigor may serve as differentiating factors in female and hermaphroditic plants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to contribute to the morphophysiological characterization of female and hermaphroditic papaya seedlings (cv. Tainung Nº1) by evaluating leaf temperature and initial growth vigor. The analysis was performed using a T-test (p < 0.05), employing a predictive approach as well to assess the potential genetic distance between the hermaphroditic and female sexual varieties. The results revealed that both hermaphroditic and female seedlings exhibited an average leaf temperature of 26.76°C, along with similar initial growth vigor. Consequently, the limited genetic differentiation, as well as the evaluated characteristics of the plants during the seedling stage, were insufficient to predict the sexual type of the plants.

RESUMOO mamoeiro tradicionalmente é propagado por sementes. A propagação assexuada é uma alternativa para a produção de plantas hermafroditas com o padrão de frutos exigidos pelo mercado consumidor. Sendo assim, objetivou-se estudar a propagação vegetativa em mamoeiro hermafrodita 'Golden', testando o ácido indol-3-butírico (AIB) no enraizamento de miniestacas, em sistema semi-hidropônico. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco concentrações de AIB (0, 3, 6, 9 e 12 mg L -1 ), com quatro repetições de seis miniestacas retiradas de plantas hermafroditas em cada parcela. Após 60 dias do cultivo, as miniestacas foram analisadas quanto à porcentagem de enraizamento, porcentagem de sobrevivência, comprimento da maior raiz, e número de folhas. A concentração em torno de 9 mg L -1 de AIB propiciou uma melhor indução ao enraizamento das miniestacas, bem como maior sobrevivência das mudas, formação de folhas e qualidade de suas raízes. Recomenda-se o uso de 9 mg L -1 de AIB no sistema semi-hidropônico de produção de mudas usando miniestacas de mamoeiro 'Golden' hermafrodita. Asexual propagation is an alternative for the production of hermaphrodite plants, with the fruit pattern required by the consumer market. The objective of this study was to study the vegetative propagation in 'Golden' hermaphrodite papaya, by testing the indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in the rooting of mini-cuttings in a semi-hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomized. The treatments consisted of five concentrations of IBA (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 mg L -1 ), with four replicates of six mini-cuttings taken from hermaphrodite plants in each plot. After 60 days of cultivation, the mini-cuttings were analyzed for rooting percentage, survival percentage, length of the largest root, and the number of leaves. The concentration around 9 mg L -1 of IBA provided a better induction to the rooting of mini-cuttings, as well as greater seedling survival, leaf formation, and root quality. The use of 9 mg L -1 of IBA in the semi-hydroponic system of seedling production is recommended using 'Golden' hermaphrodite papaya mini-cuttings.A forma de propagação do mamoeiro mais utilizada em todo o mundo é por sementes.
