Samambaias são plantas vasculares sem sementes que se distribuem em uma variedade de ecossistemas, dos trópicos à região boreal e ocupam desde o estrato herbáceo até o arborescente. Fenologia é uma ciência ambiental integrativa que estuda os eventos vegetativos e reprodutivos das plantas e a sua relação com o clima. Estudos fenológicos com samambaias têm sido realizados ao longo do território brasileiro há cerca de 36 anos, com plantas monitoradas principalmente nas regiões sul e nordeste do país. Diversos enfoques podem ser dados ao monitoramento fenológico, visando entender a influência do clima no desencadeamento das fenofases, o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das plantas. Desta forma, por meio de extensa revisão na literatura científica, este artigo objetiva abordar e construir um cenário fenológico brasileiro para as espécies de samambaias e licófitas monitoradas no país, além de compilar as abordagens metodológicas necessárias para alcançar as respostas fenológicas dessas plantas, assim como novas perspectivas de pesquisa e lacunas no campo do conhecimento a serem preenchidas. Fern and lycophyte phenology in Brazil: a methodological and ecological approach A B S T R A C TFerns are seedless vascular plants that are found from tropics to boreal region and occupy from understory to arborescent strata. Phenology is an integrative environmental science that studies the vegetative and reproductive events of plants and their relation to the climate. Phenological studies with ferns have been carried out along Brazilian territory for about 36 years, with plants monitored mainly in the southern and northeastern regions of the country. Several approaches can be given to phenological monitoring, in order to understand the influence of climate on the triggers of phenophases, the growth and development of plants. Thus, through an extensive review in the scientific literature, this article aims to approach and to construe a Brazilian phenological scenario for the fern and lycophyte species monitored in the country. In addition, to compile the methodological approaches necessary to reach the phenological responses of these plants, as well as new research perspectives and to indicate gaps in the field of knowledge to be fulfilled. Leaf phenology is the period of leaf development that is influenced by environmental factors. One environmental factor that is very influential is light intensity. Limited information on the phenology and morphological characters of aglaonema results in a lack of knowledge about the appropriate environmental requirements for the growth and development of its leaves. The research aims to analyze the phenology and morphological characteristics of Aglaonema sp. leaves at different light intensities. The research used a single factor Completely Randomized Design experiment consisting of three treatment levels, namely P0 without shade, P1 with 50% shade, and P2 with 75% shade. The treatment was repeated nine times so that a total of 27 experimental unit samples were obtained. The sample was taken using purposive sampling technique. Observations were made at the stages of leaf buds, mature leaves, wilted leaves, leaf color, leaf size, stalk length, and environmental factors. Qualitative data was analyzed descriptively and quantitative data was analyzed using the ANOVA test and 95% DNMRT follow-up test. The results of the research showed that there was a difference in the average length of the leaf development phase in the shade treatment which was higher than without shade, the average length of this phase in the three treatments was 58, 81, and 85 days respectively. Meanwhile, there are also differences in the morphological characteristics of the leaves, namely that the shade treatment has an average leaf size and petiole length that is greater than without shade. These sizes were successively in the three treatments, namely mean leaf width 6.856, 8.411, and 8.589 cm, and leaf length 15.167, 17.867, and 18.067 cm, and leaf petiole length 5.989, 7.733, and 7.989 cm. The environmental factor that influences is the intensity of light with the most optimal paranet shade, namely paranet density of 75%.

Herbivory is an interaction with great impact on plant communities since relationships between herbivores and plants are fundamental to the distribution and abundance of species over time and space. The aim of this study was to monitor the rate of leaf expansion in the tree fern Cyathea phalerata and evaluate the damage caused by herbivores to leaves of different ages and whether such damage is related to temperature and precipitation. The study was performed in a subtropical Atlantic Forest fragment located in the municipality of Caraá, in the northeast hillside of Rio Grande do Sul state, in southern Brazil. We monitored 24 mature individuals of C. phalerata with croziers in a population of approximately 50 plants. Leaf expansion rate, percentage of damaged leaves and leaf blade consumption rate by herbivory were calculated. Monthly means for temperature and accumulated rainfall were calculated from daily data. Croziers of C. phalerata were found to expand rapidly during the first and second months after emergence (3.98 cm day-1; 2.91 cm day-1, respectively). Damage caused by herbivory was observed in all of the monitored leaves, but none of the plants experienced complete defoliation. The highest percentage (57%) of damaged leaves was recorded at 60 days of monitoring, and also the highest monthly consumption rate of the blade (6.04%) occurred with young, newly-expanded leaves, while this rate remained between 1.50 and 2.21% for mature leaves. Rates of monthly leaf consumption and damaged leaves showed positive and strong relationship with each other and with temperature. The rapid leaf expansion observed for C. phalerata can be considered a phenological strategy to reduce damage to young leaves by shortening the developmental period and accelerating the increase of defenses in mature leaves.
