Leaf expansion in Rhamnus alaternus L. by leaf morphological, anatomical and physiological analysis

Abstract: Morphological, anatomical and physiological traits of Rhamnus alaternus during leaf expansion were analysed. Bud break occurred when mean air temperature was 14.1 ± 1.2C, and it was immediately followed by the increase of leaf area and leaf dry mass. The highest leaf expansion rates happened during the first 22 days of the process. Leaf area and leaf dry mass reached the steadystate value 46 and 62 days after bud break, respectively. Net photosynthesis increased from bud break to full leaf expansion, and total… Show more

“…The increase in cuticle thickness reported The same leaves were repeatedly measured for stomatal conductance over the study period Trees (2011) 25:987-996 991 here is in agreement with other studies which show that cuticle thickness increases (e.g. Gratani and Bonito 2009;Varone and Gratani 2009) and wax formation continues (e.g. Bukovac et al 1979;Gülz et al 1991;McWhorter et al 1990) throughout leaf expansion.…”

“…Furthermore, LA is an important variable for seedling establishment and for sun/shade acclimation of tropical rainforest tree species (Varone and Gratani, 2009;Coste et al, 2011;Houter and Pons, 2012;Laurans et al, 2012). The direct determination or estimation of LA is of great importance to evaluate the performance of seedlings in tree plantations and in natural forests (Coste et al, 2011;Houter and Pons, 2012;Laurans et al, 2012).…”

“…Similar P N increases in response to changes in Chl content were observed in R. alaternus expanding leaves (Varone and Gratani 2009). Besides Chl, changes in P N during leaf expansion are also dependent on minimum stomatal aperture that allows an adequate CO 2 influx inside leaves.…”

“…During leaf expansion, chloroplastidic pigments are synthesized and their concentrations are increased from immature (young) to mature leaves, as previously showed in Hevea brasiliensis (Miguel et al 2007), Rhamnus alaternus (Varone and Gratani 2009), and Quercus ilex (Gratani and Bonito 2009). The synthesis, distribution and accumulation patterns of chlorophylls and carotenoids vary according to both plant species (genetic factor) and environmental conditions.…”
