Lead toxicity in cyanobacterial porphyrin metabolism

Abstract: The effect of Pb2+ on growth, tetrapyrrole photosynthetic pigment content, total free porphyrin, and 5-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) activity of a cyanobacterium, Microchaete tenera, and its ability to sequester Pb2+ from the culture medium were studied. Pb2+ was assayed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. M. tenera growth and chlorophyll a content were not affected by 0.5, 1.0, and 6.0 ppm of Pb2+. These treatments doubled the protein content and increased the phycobiliprotein conte… Show more

“…It has been reported that the METABOLISM OF XENOBIOTICS BY CYTOCHROME P450 pathway is seriously affected in cadmium-exposed subjects [23,24]. The activity of MAPK SIGNALING pathway PORPHYRIN AND CHLOROPHYLL METABOLISM pathway have also been linked to environmental cadmium [25,26]. Again, the results provide evidence that that RIUT is a more powerful method than BIUT and this advantage transmitted to follow up interpretation analysis and considerably enhance power of microarray for biological findings.…”

“…This result agrees with Khalil (1995) who showed that nickel exerts a stimulatory effect on protein accumulation in Phormidium fragile. Zaccaro et al (2001) working with Microchaete tenera also observed an increase in protein content as a response to lead.…”

“…Zaccaro et al 73 documented that, the algal biofertilizers were likely to assume greater significance as complement and/or supplement to chemical fertilizers in improving the nutrient supplies to cereal crops because of high nutrient turn-over in the cereal production system, exorbitant cost of fertilizers and greater consciousness on environmental protection. Cytotoxicity activity.…”
