Lead(II) adsorption by peach palm waste

Abstract: A B S T R AC TThe aim of the present study was to investigate the effi ciency of chemical treatments for peach palm sheaths, targeting the treatment of Pb(II) contaminated aqueous effl uents. The modification was done with sodium hydroxide and citric acid to introduce carboxyl groups. Pb(II) adsorption was evaluated in function of pH, contact time, metal concentration, desorption ability and thermodynamic factors. An infrared adsorption peak was observed at 1740 cm -1 due to the presence of carboxyl groups. Th… Show more

“…The results demonstrate that the average desorption is 9%, that is, the adsorption (99.36% retention) of the metal species occurs irreversibly indicating that the material has more interaction with the metal under study (Salvado et al, 2012), facilitating its removal from the environment.…”

“…The negative value for the enthalpy (H = -10.26 kJ mol -1 ) means that the adsorption is exothermic. Entropy (S) had a value greater than zero (7.51 kJ mol -1 ), pointing to an increase in disorder at the interface of solid-solution, indicating spontaneous adsorption and that the process showed greater randomness (Salvado et al, 2012).…”

“…Em busca de novos materiais adsorventes este trabalho visa à utilização de resíduos do palmito pupunha o qual possui uma demanda nacional de 100000 t ano -1 , representando 18% do mercado deste produto no Brasil. Com características únicas, como produtividade precoce, a produção do palmito pupunha gera grande quantidade de biomassa (bainha, folhas, nervuras) propícia à utilização nos processos de adsorção (Chaimsohn, 2000;Salvado et al, 2012).…”
