Leachate transport through municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill liners can be slowed considerably by adsorption. MSW landfill leachate contains a large variety of pollutants at very different concentrations, and there will be competitive adsorption as these pollutants are transported through the landfill’s compacted clay liner (CCL). In this study, we used batch adsorption tests and geotechnical centrifuge modelling to examine how the adsorption of pollutants commonly found in leachate changed under competitive adsorption conditions and how competitive adsorption affected the CCL breakthrough of multiple pollutants. The results showed that the adsorption of the target pollutant on clay decreased by approximately 30% when competing pollutants were added. The speed at which the pollutants were transported through a 2-m-thick CCL increased, and the breakthrough times reduced by up to 24.8%, when the competing pollutants were mixed. Competitive adsorption significantly promoted the CCL breakthrough of pollutants at low concentrations, but it had limited effect on pollutants at high concentrations.

A new approach in landfill liner design which combines hydraulic containment of leachate with contaminant attenuation to improve the performance of these environmental control systems at landfills is described. The idea is to re-use readily available industrial waste residues (construction and biomass waste) as additives for natural clay liners, wherein the additives have specific properties which enhance the attenuation of contaminants by the mixture. The aim is to (1) evaluate the contaminant attenuation capacity of these mixtures, (2) develop design guidelines to construct liners for waste containment systems and similar applications, and (3) interpret their performance using numerical modelling. This is evaluated in permeation studies using a geotechnical centrifuge, which enables the performance of liner compositions to be tested for representive time-scales (100 years), pressures and temperatures at realistic experimental time-scales of days-weeks in the laboratory. The permeation experiments include liner compositions flushed with leachate to deduce contaminant transport and attenuation mechanisms, followed by rainwater to assess the potential for release of attenuated contaminants. This experimental methodology is illustrated with depth profiles from permeation studies conducted on different clay-additive compositions. The concept will be applicable for liner design at other waste disposal facilities and is a timely improvement which addresses the problem of managing large quantities of industrial residues. Instead of disposal these can be recycled as an additive in host clay to construct these liners, thus conserving natural resources (clay) and reducing construction costs. It also provides an effective and more environmentally sustainable basis to reduce risks from leachate leakage.

An alternative material that could be used as a liner, which can avert the heavy metal migration from landfill to soil, is the combination between bentonite and zeolite. This study aims to analyze the Pb2+ adsorption capacity of the liner and permeability of bentonite with the addition of zeolite in several percentages. There were four different types of composite in the experiment, such as pure bentonite (BZ0), bentonite + zeolite 2% (BZ2), bentonite + zeolite 5% (BZ5), and bentonite + zeolite 8% (BZ8). Bentonite and zeolite composite was inserted into a cylindrical reactor, which was compacted to adjust the condition of the study to be similar with existing condition in the landfill. This study was conducted until the leachate produced and lead concentration was tested using samples from the liner and leachate in the outlet. The results showed that the highest efficiency of lead reduction was obtained from BZ8 with the percentage of 95.2%, while the highest permeability coefficient was found in BZ8 with the value of 7.76 x 10−11 cm/s. The addition of zeolite has been proven to be able to reduce the lead concentration of leachate, but it increased the possibility of leakage.
