Agro-morphological characterization of sorghum collection in Senegal showed a wide range of variation, linked to traits like plant duration, plant height, and yield components. Sorghum accessions or landrace characterized by short duration, high, and low-medium yield components are the most represented in the collection. Simple correlations between variables of different types relating to phenology, vegetative growth, and yield components are very different, showing a relative independence of characters, and thus a wide phenotypic diversity. This diversity can be explained by plant duration, plant height, grain weight per foot, and the shape of the panicle. From these agro-morphological characteristics, varietal groups based on similarity were identified and accessions with interesting agro-morphological characteristics clustered. Racially diversity, dominated by Guinea, caudatum and Durra are also observed. This collection is an interesting breeding material for improving sorghum.

Globular Clusters (GCs) exhibit star-to-star variations in specific elements (e.g., He, C, N, O, Na, Al) that bare the hallmark of high temperature H burning. These abundance variations can be observed spectroscopically and also photometrically, with the appropriate choice of filters, due to the changing of spectral features within the band pass. This phenomenon is observed in nearly all of the ancient GCs, although, to date, has not been found in any massive cluster younger than 2 Gyr. Many scenarios have been suggested to explain this phenomenon, with most invoking multiple epochs of star-formation within the cluster, however all have failed to reproduce various key observations, in particular when a global view of the GC population is taken. We review the state of current observations, and outline the successes and failures of each of the main proposed models. The traditional idea of using the stellar ejecta from a 1st generation of stars to form a 2nd generation of stars, while conceptually straight forward, has failed to reproduce an increasing number of observational constraints. We conclude that the puzzle of multiple populations remains unsolved, hence alternative theories are needed.

Au Sénégal, le sorgho est l'une des principales cultures vivrières cependant sa production est fortement limité par la compétition des adventices. Cette étude a été réalisée dans le but de caractériser la structure de la flore adventice du sorgho en Haute Casamance. Des relevés floristiques ont été effectués au cours des campagnes culturales 2015, 2016 et 2017 dans les champs de sorgho en milieu paysan et en stations expérimentales. Les résultats montrent que la flore adventice du sorgho est constituée de 232 espèces réparties dans 138 genres et 43 familles. Cette flore est dominée par les dicotylédones avec 72,4% des espèces. Les familles des Fabaceae et des Poaceae sont les plus représentées et renferment respectivement 24,1% et 15,9% des espèces de la flore. Les thérophytes sont largement dominantes avec 69,8% des espèces recensées, suivies des phanérophytes (13,2%), des hémicryptophytes (8,2%), des géophytes (5,6%), des chaméphytes (1,7%) et enfin des plantes parasites (0,9%). En ce qui concerne la répartition biogéographique, les espèces africaines et pantropicales sont majoritaires avec respectivement 40% et 25% de la flore. Cette étude préliminaire a permis de déterminer les spectres taxonomique, biologique et chorologique. Ces résultats sont utiles et constituent un préalable pour apprécier la nuisibilité des espèces adventices et pour proposer une méthode raisonnée de gestion des adventices du sorgho.
