Show more

“…Fathers see their spouses as not encouraging or impeding them to in their role as a father, mothers are perceived as remaining neutral. This result is contrary to the literature; mothers usually appear as important partners fostering the fathers’ involvement in child care or not (De Luccie, 1996; Hoffman & Moon, 1999; Van Egeren, 2001). We hypothesize that recognizing this maternal influence could belittle fathers and reduce them to being only “mothers’ assistants”.…”

“…More than mothering, fathering is influenced by contextual factors in the family and the community (Doherty, Kouneski, & Erickson, 1998; Jones & Hermann, 1992), for example economic poverty (Zaouche-Gaudron, 2005). Within the family unit, mothers play an important role in fathers’ involvement (De Luccie, 1996; Lamb & Oppenheim, 1989; Pleck, 1997; Van Egeren, 2001). Indeed, mother’s employment and her representations on paternal involvement and the father’s role, are powerful factors supporting paternal involvement.…”

“…Less is known about the relationship between covert dimensions of co-parenting conflict and adult functioning, in general. A key consideration on covert conflict behaviors is the notion of control, namely who is originating the behavior, with distinction made between behaviors that an individual controls themselves and behaviors that are originated from outside sources, including their co-parent (see Van Egeren, 2001;Van Egeren & Hawkins, 2004). Self-controlled covert conflict behaviors involve those that are engaged in by the individual themselves, whereas externally controlled covert conflict behaviors are those that fall outside of their influence.…”
