The iron and steel industry is characterized by high energy consumption and thus presents significant potential for problems from the point of view of noise pollution. The aim of this paper is to examine characteristics of acoustical emissions and immissions of some fundamental components of iron and steel plants with a discussion of possible measures to reduce noise pollution. For a large integrated iron and steel system, some survey results are shown with all components operating and, in addition, comparisons are made with other survey results obtained when the main components were out of service for significant maintenance. ©
