Latitudinal Gradients in Induced and Constitutive Resistance against Herbivores

Abstract: Plants are hypothesized to evolve increased defense against herbivores at lower latitudes, but an increasing number of studies report evidence that contradicts this hypothesis. Few studies have examined the evolution of constitutive and induced resistance along latitudinal gradients. When induction is not considered, underlying patterns of latitudinal clines in resistance can be obscured because plant resistance represents a combination of induced and constitutive resistance, which may show contrasting pattern… Show more

“…We found that total phenolics and oenothein A were consistently associated with lower herbivore pressure, and that these measures of plant chemical defense were found in higher concentrations in genotypes from lower latitudes (Anstett et al. , ). The oxidized form of oenothein A was also greater at lower latitudes in O. biennis (Anstett et al.…”

“…Secondary metabolites have been shown to be greater at lower latitudes in one species, Oenothera biennis , where specialist herbivory is lowest (Anstett et al. , ). Additionally, we focus on constitutive concentrations of two major classes of polyphenols that originate from different biosynthetic pathways, the flavonoids and ellagitannins.…”
