Latest Advances on Bacterial Cellulose-Based Antibacterial Materials as Wound Dressings

Abstract: At present, there are various wound dressings that can protect the wound from further injury or isolate the external environment in wound treatment. Whereas, infection and slow self-healing still exist in wound healing process. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an ideal wound dressing with good biocompatibility and strong antibacterial activity to promote wound healing. Bacterial cellulose is a kind of promising biopolymer because it can control wound exudate and provide a moist environment for wound healing.… Show more

“…In fact, a number of studies have shown a high level of eradication of wound pathogens by antiseptic molecules released from BC, both in vitro and in vivo [ 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ]. Further, an increasing number of such antiseptic-containing BC dressings are commercially available and applied in clinical practice [ 59 ]. Thus, we aimed to confirm that BC obtained from PJ media was also suitable in this context.…”

“…In addition to barrier property, they would also have specific flexibility, applicability, constancy, biodegradability and be able to remove, pace the healing process, and decrease the risk of infection. 4 , 5 Today, the use of advanced mats comprising antibacterial properties is essential in preventing and treating wound infections. Despite the diversity of wound dressings in the market, highly exuding wounds are difficult to heal as dressings cannot efficiently inhibit the wound's microbial invasion.…”

“…Dressings of injury, imitation skin, dental transplants, medication delivery, hemostatic constituents, vascular grafts, tissue engineering, biosensors, and diagnostics are just a few of the biomedical applications where BNC holds a lot of promise ( Figure 8 ) ( Rajwade et al, 2015 ; Anton-Sales et al, 2019 ; Carvalho et al, 2019 ). All biomedical applications necessitate BNC because of its high purity and biocompatibility ( Zheng et al, 2020 ). The endotoxin in BNC is likewise highly controlled, with less than twenty endotoxin units, which fulfills the FDA’s in vivo standards ( Petersen and Gatenholm, 2011 ).…”
