Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 production environments integrate the physical and decisional aspects of manufacturing processes into autonomous and decentralised systems. One of the main aspects in these systems is production planning, in particular scheduling operations on machines. We introduce here a new decision-making schema, Smart Scheduling, intended to yield flexible and efficient production schedules on the fly, taking advantage of the features of these new environments. The ability to face unforeseen and disruptive events is one of the main improvements in our proposed schema, which uses an efficient screening procedure (Tolerance Scheduling) to lessen the need of rescheduling in the face of those events.

Dynamic manufacturing processes are characterized by a lack of coordination, complexity and sheer volumes of data. Digital transformation technologies offer the manufacturers the capability to better monitor and control both assets and production. This provides also an ever-improving ability to investigate new products and production concepts in the virtual world while optimizing future production with IoT-captured data form different devices and shop floor machine centres. In this study, a digital twin is presented for an assembly line, where IoT-captured data are fed back into the digital twin enabling manufacturers to interface, analyse and measure the performance in real-time of a manufacturing process. The digital twin concept is then applied to an assembly production plan found in the automotive industry, where actual data is considered to analyse how the digital duplicate can be used to review activities and improve productivity within all production shifts.

In order to solve the lean problems such as anti-error ability and low productivity of the new model of mobile tank sugar casing production line of Ningbo Cigarette Factory, lean transformation was carried out to improve the lean problems existing in the sugar casing production line. The results show that through this lean transformation, the errors in the ingredient process of the sugar casing production line have been solved, and productivity has been increased by 50%. This lean process can provide technical support for the lean transformation of other production lines in the industry.
