Latent human herpesvirus - 8 (HHV-8) infection in female commercial sex workers from Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract: Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection was identified in 6 out of 90 (6.7%) female commercial sex workers from Imbituba, Santa Catarina, and was associated to age. Frequencies of 5.6% of anti-latent and 3.3% of anti-lytic antibodies were detected. Considering non-endemic areas from Brazil, the anti-latent antibodies frequency seems elevated and requires further investigation on referent female population.

“…Serum samples obtained during cross-sectional studies conducted between 1999 and 2008 by the Immunology Department of Instituto Adolfo Lutz, Sã o Paulo, Brazil were studied [Carbone, 2003;Magri, 2008] [Caterino-de-Araujo et al, 2007a;Magri, 2008;Magri et al, 2008]. Group 6 comprised 683 handicapped individuals from Centro Espírita Nosso Lar/ Casas André Luis, São Paulo (age: 4-52 years, 69.9% men) [Carbone, 2003].…”

“…Discordance between serological assays and the lack of a ''gold standard'' test could account for the discrepancies noted in these results. The Immunology Department of the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, a Public Health Laboratory in Sã o Paulo, Brazil, has standardized and optimized serological assays and currently uses these assays to identify ''at-risk'' populations [Caterino-de-Araujo et al, 2000, 2003, 2007a, 2007bCarbone, 2003;Cunha et al, 2005;Avelleira et al, 2006;Magri, 2008;Magri et al, 2008]. Using a combination of well established ''in house'' immunofluorescence assays for detecting antibodies to latent nuclear antigens (LANA) and lytic antigens (IFA-LANA and IFA-Lytic assays, respectively), a retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to compare the frequency and titers of HHV-8 antibodies in ''at-risk'' populations of clinical interest, including patients with HIV/AIDS, patients with chronic kidney disease, health care workers, handicapped individuals, and patients with KS.…”

“…In the same study, when HHV-8 prevalence was determined, based on region, foreign prostitutes most of whom were from Nigeria had a HHV-8 prevalence of 42.9% compared to 10.3% among those of Western Europe origin [35]. Caterino de Araujo et al [36] in Imbituba, Santa Catarina Brazil reported a HHV-8 prevalence of 6.7% among FSWs. In South Africa, FSWs, miners and male and female residents of a township recorded a prevalence of HHV-8 of 50.5%, 48.4%, 47.5% and 46%, respectively [28].…”

“…The sequences used were (5¢ to 3¢) GCM CAG GGW CAT AAY GG (MY11, upstream primer position HPV6 ⁄ 6722-6741) and CGT CCM ARR GGA WAC TGA TC (MY09, downstream primer, position HPV 6 ⁄ 7170-7151) (14) (accession number for nucleotide sequence: U45939; Invitrogen Brazil Ltd.). These primers are designed to amplify DNA from genital HPV types 6,11,16,18,31,33,35,39,45,51, and 52 and were initially described for the detection of genital HPV as an appropriate diagnostic protocol for woman (14)(15)(16) and man (17) genital HPV infections. However, they have also been widely used to analyze skin lesions and oral mucosa (16,18,19).…”
