Data from offshore oil and gas explorations have revealed that mud diapirs occur widely not only at continental margins but also in foreland basins and may have played an important role in the entrapment of oil and gas. Although the structural features and formation mechanism of salt diapirs have been extensively investigated, mud diapirs are still not fully understood, largely due to the difficulty of identifying them from seismic data. In this paper, the structural features and main controlling factors of mud diapirs in the Andaman Sea Basin are investigated based on seismic profiles combined with drilling data and regional tectonic settings. The results show that there are five types of mud diapir in the Andaman Sea Basin: turtleback mud diapir, mud dome, piercing mud diapir, mud volcano and gas chimney-like mud diapir. Turtleback mud diapirs mainly occur in the southern segment of the accretionary wedge of the Andaman Sea Basin, which is far from the Bengal Fan and characterized by low deposition rate and strong compression tectonic setting. Piercing mud diapirs exist mainly in the central segment of the accretionary wedge, which is close to provenances of sediments and characterized by rapid sedimentation rates, large mudstone thickness and transpressional tectonic setting. Mud domes and mud volcanoes mainly occur in the northern segment of the accretionary wedge, which is characterized by rapid sedimentation rates, large mudstone thickness and sedimentary wedge growth tectonic setting. The gas chimney-like mud diapirs only occur in the northern segment of the back-arc depression close to the Sagaing strike-slip fault belt, which is characterized by high deposition rate, large mudstone thickness and high geothermal gradient. These features suggest that thick mudstone deposit, rapid sedimentation rates, large geothermal gradient, strong tectonic stress and gravitational spreading and sliding may have prompted the formation of mud diapirs in the Andaman Sea Basin.

Thick Devonian carboniferous carbonates had been deposited in a shallow marine before they were uplifted by granitic intrusion during Triassic. This carbonate platform was selectively dolomitized along N-S oriented deepseated fault that presented in the carbonate platform. Dolostones are characterized into significant matrix dolomites and several cement dolomites. In petrography point of view, matrix dolomites comprise very fine-to fine-crystalline nonplanar-anhedral dolomite (Dolo-I), fine-to coarse-crystalline nonplanar-anhedral to planar dolomite (Dolo-II), and fine-to medium-crystalline planar-dolomite (Dolo-III). Cement dolomites also consist of medium-to coarsecrystalline planar saddle dolomite (Dolo-IV) which halfway or totally fill disintegration vugs and breaks and coarse-to very coarse-crystalline nonplanar to planar dedolomite (Ded-I). Matrix dolomites predated cement dolomites, later infilled with sepiolite and calcite. The origins of matrix and cement dolomites and other diagenetic minerals are interpreted based on the petrography and isotopic signatures by a previous worker. Dolo-I dolomite was initiated by the early stage of dolomitization with the replacement of calcite by first driving fluids from low to high temperature of magmatic source. While Dolo-II dolomite was formed with slightly modified from Dolo-I and more Mg concentration inputs. Dolo-III dolomite was likely the consequence of hydrothermal fluids causing a brecciation textures as dolomite precipitated rapidly. Subsequently, in a high temperature, the Dolo-III dolomite was formed by precipitation of cement dolomite, hydrothermal fluids as evidenced by highly depleted values of isotopic δ 18 O. This study intends to provide useful information for understanding the dolomitization processes in alteration of hydrothermal related to Palaeozoic carbonates within Kinta Limestone.

Low-temperature thermochronological techniques, specifically apatite (U-Th)/He and apatite fission-track dating, were used to reconstruct the thermal history of southeastern Thailand. This area is intersected by vast and complex fault networks related to the Cenozoic Mae Ping and Three Pagodas Faults. These were identified from satellite imagery and confirmed by field observations. New apatite fission-track and apatite (U-Th)/He data were collected from crystalline basement blocks within these fault networks. Ages obtained range from 48 to 24 Ma, with most of the samples clustering between 36 and 24 Ma. Thermal history modelling indicates late Eocene-Oligocene exhumation of the exposed granitic and metamorphic basement rocks in southeastern Thailand. Exhumation was regional and was contemporaneous with sinistral fault activity during the late Eocene-early Oligocene along the Mae Ping Fault and Three Pagodas Fault. Moreover, this exhumation occurred coevally with a synrift phase of intracontinental offshore rift basin and half-graben basin development in the eastern Gulf of Thailand. The phase of exhumation ended in the early Miocene, as a result of the changing plate-tectonic forces along the complex plate boundaries of Sundaland.
