Late defoliation of ‘Chardonnay’ grapevine in subtropical highland climate

Abstract: Chardonnay cultivar has shown great potential of planting and development in sites above 900 m of Brazilian southeast for sparkling wines production. The quality of this product is related to vineyard climate and management, since both affect the vine development and grape composition. In this study, three defoliation orientations (east, west and east/west face), at veraison, and a group without defoliation, were compared in order to observe the impacts of this management on the productivity, grape and base wi… Show more

“…In wines Nero d’Avola, there were significantly higher amounts of furfural aldehydes and C13-norisoprenoids than in controls [ 10 ]. Leaf removal increases monoterpenes and other volatile terpenes in ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, ‘Gewürztraminer’, and ‘Chardonnay Musqué’ grapes from subtropical highland climates [ 30 ]. Vintage was found to be the major source of the variability of the ketones, so the four of them had higher concentrations in 2017 ( 100 , 101 , and 109 ) while and three were more abundant in 2018 ( 107 , 108 , and 116 ).…”

“…The European Commission, as dictated by recent actions like "The European Green Deal" action and the EU Directive 2009/128/EC on the sustainable use of pesticides, promotes the use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and alternative methods to control plant pests and diseases (Sante, 2017). In IPM, several agronomic practices like irrigation and canopy management have been suggested as means to minimize disease development in grapevine (Tello et al, 2015;Mosetti et al, 2016;Thomidis et al, 2016;Figueiredo et al, 2020;Wurz et al, 2020). The integration of such agricultural practices is expected to influence the microclimate of berry clusters with reciprocal effects on the composition of the associated microbiome and pathobiome (Pastore et al, 2013).…”

“…Serra da Mantiqueira is a new winemaking frontier for producing sparkling wines [ 16 , 17 ]; therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the aromatic profile of Chardonnay sparkling wines (made according to the champenoise method) under two training systems, lyre and GDC.…”
