“…When perforating stapedotomy in humans, the structures that are most exposed are the saccule and the utricle, whereas fenestration in the basal turn of the guinea pig cochlea, however, involves a higher risk to structures of organ of Corti like the basilar membrane, the stria vascularis, the outer and inner hair cells, etc. In addition, the guinea pig cochlea has been reported to be 10 times sensitive to acoustic trauma than the human cochlea [21]. Since this probably results in higher vulnerability of these anatomic structures in the animal experiment, inner ear damage is more likely to induce from laser application in our animal model than would be the case when irradiation in the human stapes footplate and the vestibule, and therefore overestimate the detrimental effects we have seen.…”

“…Several studies have reported on the reliability of procedures in which different instruments are used, such as manual perfo rators, electric or pneumatic drills and. last ly, laser [2,5,9,10]. According to various reports, no difference is believed to exist as far as concerns the hearing results, even though it is assumable that the degree of the trauma to the inner ear varies according to which instrument is used for creating the hole in the stapedial footplate.…”
