A pedagogic four-stroke cycle model for actual automotive heat engines is presented. The model considers a quite realistic picture of both the intake and exhaust processes, so that normal, throttled and supercharged ways of performance can be explicitly analysed. Irreversibilities are considered as global losses lumped in a friction-like term with a force linear in the piston velocity. Calculated net efficiency and net power output show agreement with measured values and with the characteristic power-versus-efficiency loop curve of real heat engines. Results for both Diesel and Otto engines as well as a comparison between them is explicitly presented. Recent reported results for an irreversible two-stroke Otto cycle are obtained from this model as a particular case.
