“…For the aqueous solutions the intensity is higher than for the amorphous materials, but In this low-wavenumber range the skeletal vibrational motions, υ(C-C-C), υ(C-C-O), υ(C-O) and C-C), dominate. 5,8,13,23,32 Wells and Atalla 13 suggested the possible contribution also of fairly pure OH proton motions in this spectral range but we found no evidence of that with the force field we used. We found that hydrogen movement is very limited in this spectral range.…”

“…It seems to be more appropriate to assign the bands at 848 and 916 cm 1 to˛-glucose and the bands at 868 and 894 cm 1 toˇ-glucose. Other workers have also suggested contributions from (C-C) 8,23,32 and (C-H) 8,24 motions over this range. Contributions from (C-O) vibrations have been suggested by Hineno 23 and Korolevich et al 32 Wells and Atalla 13 assigned these 'anomeric bands' to skeletal modes involving the anomeric carbon, which would explain the relatively large wavenumber shift between the˛-andˇ-glucose vibrations.…”

“…Glycoproteins and mucin could make the major contribution to this component [47,48]. Several strong Raman peaks of the second component are assigned to acetates (632, 1295, 1434, and 1744 cm -1 ) [49][50][51] and carbohydrates (323 cm -1 and 521 cm -1 ) [46,52], which are also present in saliva [53][54][55]. This spectral component shows (Figure 1.C, curve c) minute spectral regions with a flat horizontal shape (zero intensity level), which are the result of the nonegativity constrain used for calculating meaningful Raman spectral components.…”
