Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 immune response in plasma

Abstract: As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic persists, methods that can quickly and reliably confirm infection and immune status is extremely urgently and critically needed. In this contribution we show that combining laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with machine learning can distinguish plasma of donors who previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR from those who did not, with up to 95% accuracy. The samples were also analyzed by LIBS-ICP-MS in tandem mode, implicating a depletion of Zn and Ba in samples o… Show more

“…The correct rate was better than 98% with the help of extreme learning machine classifier [ 16 ]. Berlo et al applied LIBS and machine learning to distinguish serum of donors who previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from those who did not, with an up to 95% correct rate [ 17 ]. Mohammad et al used laser-induced fluorescence to enhance the LIBS signal of Rb in blood.…”

“…For both origin and cultivation discrimination 200 Hg, 202 Hg, 97 Mo, 98 Mo, 23 Na, 60 Ni, 118 Sn, 205 Tl, and 232 Th were found to have no signicant impact on the models. For assessment of cultivation only 107 Ag, 137 Ba, 43 Ca, 44 Ca, 24 Mg, and 66 Zn were required to discriminate between eld and forest grown samples. For geographical origins, 35 elements were used to discriminate between the ve regions studied.…”

“…Both highlight the potential of LIBS as a clinical tool. An interesting application of LIBS was described by Berlo et al 107 for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 immune response. The researchers analysed 97 blood plasma samples (50 controls and 47 positive RT-PCR) and compared several LIBS instruments as well as LIBS coupled with ICP-MS. Utilising the combined data sets and chemometric models, it was ascertained that the two groups could be distinguished with 95% accuracy.…”

“…LIBS enabled the differentiation of participants into positive and negative SARS‐CoV‐2 groups with approximately 95% accuracy, 98% sensitivity and 98% specificity by measuring blood plasma components such as Mg, Na, Ca and CN [110]. LIBS analysis involves minimum sample preparation and no reagents, and it may be turned into a rapid and reliable tool in combination with machine learning.…”
