Laser-induced break-up of water jet waveguide

Abstract: In this article, an optical method to control the break-up of high-speed liquid jets is proposed. The method consists of focusing the light of a pulsed laser source into the jet behaving as a waveguide. Experiments were performed with the help of a Q-switched frequency doubled Nd:Yag laser (k=532 nm). The jet diameter was 48 lm and jet velocities from 100 to 200 m/s. To study the laser-induced water jet break-up, observations of the jet coupled with the high power laser were performed for variable coupling and… Show more

“…209 The geometries of the chamber and nozzle are critical to energy coupling of the laser beam into the water jet and the mode of water jet guided laser beam. 213,214 The stable length of the water jet is about 1000 times the jet diameter. The water jet can thus be described as a fluid optical waveguide of variable length.…”

“…On the basis of the theoretical explanations given, conditions for stable operation are indicated. Comparison was made between the theory and exist ing experimental [13] and numerical studies [14]. The new theoretical results and improved understanding of the phenomenon of instability of high speed water jets form a basis for the improvement of the water jet cut ting technology.…”

“…However, for small jet diameters and when high-power laser light is coupled into the jet with offset, laser-induced breakup can occur, leading to the premature breakup of the jet. 15 …”

“…They are due to initial perturbations [12][13][14] and also to laser-induced breakup. 15 In addition, due to the long interaction length between the high-intensity beam of a 100-W frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser and water, high-efficiency stimulated Raman scattering has been seen in micrometer-size water jets. 16 The aim of this article is to demonstrate the laser ablation process when using a high-power laser focused into a microjet with direct coupling.…”
