Laser Fabrication of Anti-Icing Surfaces: A Review

Abstract: In numerous fields such as aerospace, the environment, and energy supply, ice generation and accretion represent a severe issue. For this reason, numerous methods have been developed for ice formation to be delayed and/or to inhibit ice adhesion to the substrates. Among them, laser micro/nanostructuring of surfaces aiming to obtain superhydrophobic behavior has been taken as a starting point for engineering substrates with anti-icing properties. In this review article, the key concept of surface wettability an… Show more

“…The practical application of laser-generated micro-and nanostructures that control hydrophobicity of surfaces is preventing ice formation. The problem is relevant in aerospace, energy supply, telecommunication, environment protection [121], [122]. The laser texturing strategies, including direct laser writing (DLW) to laser-induced periodic surface structuring (LIPSS) and direct laser interference patterning (DLIP), provide excellent results on metals and polymers, providing a long-living effect.…”

“…The dimensions of the textures range from nanometer (nm) to micrometer (μm) thus providing the ability to tailor and control the characteristic micro-topography but also physicochemical properties of solid surfaces. So far, LST has been used for functional enhancement concerning, i.e., self-cleaning [82], anti-icing [83], or anti-bacterial [84] surfaces. Actually, there is an ongoing trend for mimicking natural concepts by LST with great potential to be used for biomimetic surface functionalities, interfaces and products [85].…”

“…Laser etching can provide dual scale hierarchical structures on such surfaces and induce superhydrophobicity, as described in some recent review papers [22,68]. Moreover, laser-based surface texturing is considered as a precise and flexible method and several examples exist in the literature.…”
