Laser excitation of NaNe collision pairs probing the AΠ2 potential

Abstract: Experimental differential cross sections for the collision process Na(3s)2S+Ne+hnu-->Na(3p)2P+Ne are reported. By comparison with calculated cross sections, we are able to discriminate between different spectroscopic and quantum chemical A2Pi potentials with cm(-1) sensitivity.

“…Under the present conditions, negative detuning results in Π A 2 excitation during the collision, positive detuning in Σ + B 2 excitation, producing Na( p 3 ) atoms after the collision in both cases. Experiments [1,6] are carried out using crossed atomic and laser beams (see figure 1). Excited collision products are stabilized by transfer to a long-lived Rydberg state…”

“…We present now an extended treatment, using the complete set of spectroscopic data from [2] and a set of scattering data extended by new measurements. For the theoretical analysis, we apply a coupled states model in both cases and we expect more accurate information on the coupled system Π A 2 and Σ + B 2 correlating to + ( ) p s p Na(3 ) Ne 2 2 2 6 . We could in this way establish the assignment of reported but yet-unassigned transitions and we found corrections to the original assignments.…”

“…The dynamics of Rydberg atoms in time-dependent fields can mimic the dynamics of atomic collisions [18], e.g., laser-assisted collisions at a specific impact parameter [19,20]. Laser-assisted differential scattering cross sections are very difficult to measure in general, and only a few experimental results are available for molecular beams at thermal velocities [21]. Therefore, Rydberg systems may serve as simplified model systems in the field of atomic collisions.…”

“…Control of the coUisional process has also been achieved [7]. Accurate tests of the interatomic potentials have been performed using the oscillatory structure seen in the differential cross sections [8]. A direct observation of nonadiabatic transitions in the exit channel of optical collisions is possible by selectively exciting an electronic state and measuring the final populations of e.g.…”
