Larval morphology of the family Parthenopidae, with the description of the megalopa stage of Derilambrus angulifrons (Latreille, 1825) (Decapoda: Brachyura), identified by DNA barcode

Abstract: Although Parthenopidae is a brachyuran decapod family comprising almost 140 species, there is little knowledge about its larval morphology. There are only two complete larval developments reared in the laboratory and some larval stages described for seven species. In the present work these data are compared and analysed. A summary is made of the larval features that characterize parthenopids that can be used to distinguish them from other brachyuran larvae. In addition, the megalopa stage of Derilambrus anguli… Show more

“…Metabarcoding was used to identify macrozooplankton, epipelagic mesozooplankton (0−200 m), and microbial communities (prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes) (Supplementary Table 3 ). Specifically, DNA from macrozooplankton (crustacean, mollusks, and insects) was extracted as in Marco-Herrero et al 55 . Target mitochondrial DNA from the 16S rRNA and COI genes was amplified with polymerase chain reaction (PCR).…”

“…In this context, crustaceans, that represent one of the most diverse metazoan groups from a morphological and ecological point of view 9 with more than 67,000 described species so far 10 , are an interesting target taxon for DNA barcoding because they are not always easy to identify by traditional approaches and usually require the help of highly trained taxonomists 11 . One of the biggest problems is to identify the larval stages of this group, because the larvae are distinguishable but not easily matched with the correct adult form 12,13 . Therefore, this problem causes obstacles in studies such as plankton ecology or population connectivity 14,15 .…”

“…No 16S or COI sequences were obtained for this specimen. In Genbank, there are three sequences of 16S (KP057808, KP057811, and KP057812) and three sequences of COI (KP057815, KP057818, and KP057819) obtained by Marco-Herrero et al [109] for adults and larvae from the Mediterranean Sea.…”
