When conducting entomological research, it is necessary to have a sufficient quantity of the desired pest. One of the pests commonly used in research is Spodoptera litura. Mass rearing of herbivorous caterpillars like S. litura requires large amounts of a suitable food source. Hence, the use of an easy-to-grow host plant would be most practical and reasonable. Centella asiatica known as ‘pegaga’ grows easily, produces plenty of leaves, and is available throughout the year in Malaysia. The suitability of C. asiatica as a food source for S. litura was evaluated by studying the biology of this pest on excised C. asiatica leaves, under laboratory conditions. S. litura completed its whole life cycle in 29 to 35 days. The mean pupal weight and the average number of eggs laid by a single female were 0.341 g and 1,930 eggs, respectively. Daily monitoring of the larval development stages as well as analysis on the width of head capsules, revealed the existence of six instars during the larval stages of S. litura. The cumulative survival rate for immature developmental stages was 80%, while the stage-specific survivorship was over 90%. This study demonstrated the use of ‘pegaga’ as a suitable new food source for when rearing S. litura larvae in the laboratory.

Sustainable insect supply is a routine activity in research of pest control, experimental insecticide bioassay, entomophatogen, parasitoid, and nature of competitor. Armyworm (Spodoptera litura Fabr.) is one of the alternative test insect. A mass rearing method is required to provide high demands of S. litura. A life table of insect is regularly used to study several biological parameters including the net reproduction rate of population (Ro), the mean length of life period in one generation (T), reproduction potential value of one generation from a population (rm), and the potential of a population to multiply in one generation (ë). The aim of this study were to asses the development time and reproduction potential of S. litura which different of artificial diets. Laboratory bioassays were conducted to compare the effects of the leaf extract of Acalypha indica L. (Euphorbiaceae) with synthetic insect growth regulators (IGRs) triflumuron and buprofezin against Spodoptera litura (F.). The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The treatments were two concentrations of A. indica extracts 1000 and 2000 ppm, two concentrations of buprofezin 100 and 200 ppm, two concentrations of triflumuron 120 and 240 ppm and control. Each treatment was replicated three times. Second instar larva of S. litura were used for the bioassays. Mortality and biological variables of treated and control larvae were recorded daily. The results indicated that the application of A. indica extracts and synthetic IGRs (buprofezin & triflumuron) significantly caused the S. litura mortality throughout the experimental period. At first, the toxicity of triflumuron on larval S. litura was significantly higher compared to those of buprofezin and Acalypha indica leaf extract. However, at the end of experimental period all treatments caused high mortality on S. litura, and those all were significantly different from control. The treatments also caused abnorrmal growth in larval, pupal, and adult stages. While in the control, larvae molted into normal adults. The results indicated that the use of biorational control agents such as synthetic insect growth regulators (IGRs) and those based on naturally derived products such as botanical insecticides show promise as a potential tool in S. litura management programs.
