Large-scale synthesis of polyhedral Ag nanoparticles for printed electronics

Abstract: The large-scale synthesis of polyhedral Ag nanoparticles (NPs) described here follows a mediated-particle mechanism and the formulation of NPs in high volume fraction ink easily forms highly electrically conductive lines for printed electronics.

“…64,65 Ag ions (salt) were converted to silver(I) oxide, whereas by significantly increasing the pH of the medium during the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles, Ag + can be converted to silver(I) oxide due to NaOH (aq) used for the pH adjustment. The use of NaOH to produce a solid Ag 2 O phase was previously reported 66,67 that silver ions in the presence of OH ions form AgOH (aq), which quickly decompose when heated and precipitate to form the desired Ag 2 O, 68 as shown in the following chemical reaction eq 2. Conversely, the use of amino acids (phenylalanine and (2)…”

“…If more complex nanostructures are employed, even multipolar resonances can appear, as in the case of nanobars, or nanoshells [ 104 , 105 ]. In the past few years, a trend towards several polyhedral, disks, nanocrescent, and other complex nanostructures have been observed in the pursuit of higher RI sensitivities, and corresponding FOM [ 71 , 103 , 106 , 107 , 108 , 109 , 110 ]. The enhanced characteristics can be explained by the most elongated nanostructures, or the ones presenting sharper tips, generating hot spots.…”

“…Looking forward, we expect to successfully deposit an electrode with this method in the following months, considering that the ink can be easily processed by inkjet printing as we have recently shown. 16 In conclusion, we measured the ORR of commercial Ag ink in an alkaline medium. To the best of our knowledge, such measurement was not reported previously.…”

“…The nanoshell electrocatalysts were synthesized by first diluting a commercial silver ink consisting of Ag NPs with a well-defined particle size distribution (PSD), a mean size of 64 ± 20 nm in diameter and a polyhedral morphology as shown on the SEM image (Figure A) and previously reported by Polani et al The Ag NPs were used as a chemical sacrificial template in the synthesis of AgM (M = Pt or Pd) nanocrystals which exhibited hollow interiors as well as controlled surface composition. The synthesis was based on the GRR between metallic Ag and MCl 4 –2 (aq) . …”
