Large-scale seasonal distribution of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in the central Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) are the only mysticete regularly found in the Mediterranean Sea. Its exceptional high abundance during the summer period in the north-western Mediterranean is essentially due to productive waters, but outside of this spatio-temporal window its distribution still remains quite unknown. This paper investigates the distribution of the fin whale on large-scales during the 2002-2006 period. Three areas of the central Mediterranean Sea were selected: the Ligurian Sea in the north-w… Show more

“…On the other hand, the sightings of B. physalus in the area of the Strait of Messina confirmed the importance of this area as seasonal feeding ground and for the migration patterns of this species through different marine geographical regions in the Mediterranean (Aissi et al, 2008). The absence of sightings in the southern part of the transect could be linked to a different seasonal use of this area but more investigation is needed to confirm this data.…”

“…Notwithstanding the small sample size, these data provide the first unequivocal migratory link between the Island of Lampedusa and the Ligurian Sea. In addition, preliminary photo-identification data showed that the same highly scarred, and thus easily identified, individual was around the Island of Lampedusa in February 2005, and in the Ligurian Sea in late May and early September 2005 (Aïssi et al 2008).…”

“…Fin whales may perform a migration from the PELAGOS sanctuary to around Lampedusa Island, through the Messina Strait [41]. Other studies have shown that some animals fitted with Argos tags moved to the Alboran Sea and the Gibraltar Strait [42].…”
