Large Fibroepithelial Polyp of Vulva

Abstract: A rare case of a large fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) of the vulva is described. The polypoidal growth was 10 cm in its largest diameter, having a long pedicle with features of inflammation secondary to infection, and was found arising from the left labia majora. The patient did not manifest any signs of recurrence following excision. A large and infected FEP of the vulva is a rare occurrence and hence reported.

“…She was a climacteric patient, who already presented irregular menstrual cycles and was not taking hormonal medication. These tumors have been described in menace, and even during pregnancy, when women present high circulating estrogen and progesterone level [8]. Importantly, the patient in the herein reported case was obese and diabetic; her clinical data are often associated with these conditions [8].…”

“…4 There are only a few reported cases of giant fibroepithelial stromal polyps of the vulva so far. [5][6][7] Occasionally reports have mentioned about recurrence of the lesion as well. 6 Differential diagnosis that should be considered include Neurofibroma, Premalignant fibroepithelial tumour, Seborrheic keratosis , Angiomyxoma and genital warts.…”

“…They mostly grow being less than 5 cm in diameter [ 14 ], but they can rarely reach extremely large size, up to 15–20 cm. A few reports regarding the giant FEPs larger than 10 cm have been described in literature [ 5 , 15 , 16 ]. Of all these reports, there was only one case except our presentation reporting the labial FEP in the psoriatic patient [ 15 ].…”

“…In the case report of Dane et al, they have proclaimed that chronic inflammatory processes as in psoriasis diseases may modulate or trigger the development of FEPs under the influence of reparative processes similar to neoplasms [ 15 ]. In the case report of Navada et al, they detected the inflammation in their pathological specimen; however, they interpreted these findings as inflammation that occurred as a result of a possible secondary infection following trauma [ 16 ]. In the current case, histopathological examination revealed signs of inflammation in FEPs too.…”
