Large AdS black holes from QFT

Abstract: We study the index of N = 4 Yang-Mills theory on S 3 × R at large angular momenta. A generalized Cardy limit exhibits macroscopic entropy at large N . Our result is derived using free QFT analysis, and also a background field method on S 3 . The index sets a lower bound on the entropy. It saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of known supersymmetric AdS 5 black holes, thus accounting for their microstates. We further analyze the so-called Macdonald index, exploring small black holes and possibly new black h… Show more

“…Similar results were obtained in [10,11]. These developments built upon the original counting for rotating, electrically charged, asymptotically AdS 5 black holes via the superconformal index of N " 4 maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills [12][13][14] which has also been extended to black holes in AdS 6 [15] and AdS 7 [16,17]. These impressive results set the stage for precision entropy counting and we hope that this manuscript will serve as a handbook for computations on the gravitational side.…”

“…There has been recently a lot of progress in the microscopic derivation of the entropy of anti de Sitter (AdS) black holes, starting with the magnetically charged and topologically twisted ones in AdS 4 × S 7 [1] and followed by the Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes in AdS 5 ×S 5 [2][3][4]. This analysis has been extended to many other black objects in AdS d , with d = 4, 5, 6, 7 with different types of electromagnetic charges and rotations and with various amounts of supersymmetry.…”

“…We also note that some of the large N techniques explored in this paper might find applications to study black holes in AdS 4 /CFT 3 , AdS 6 /CFT 5 or AdS 7 /CFT 6 . These problems have been studied in [38,39,40], [41,42] and [11,43,44], but we think we can do more interesting…”

“…After extremizing this function with δ I , σ, τ subject to the constraint I δ I − σ − τ = −1, one takes the real part Re(S) to get the entropy [11,28,13]. This computation can be done easily using the universal form (4.12), by noting that primed variables δ ′ I , σ ′ , τ ′ are K times δ I , σ, τ apart from real constant shifts.…”
